Hi Guys/Gals,

I am having trouble trying to come up with a method of creating 3D effects. Say I want a blueish coloured fire that is around my main charater, or a bolt of lightning. How do you get that effect. Is it a 3D model with some clever texture or am I completely wrong? I have seem some awesome effects in some MMORPG's I've played but how do you get them.
I can make some nice 2D effects with sprites etc but thats no good in a 3D environment.
all I need is some good advice as to the direction to go and I'll happilly sort it out as I learn better by doing it myself.

thanks.

There are many ways you can do this...

One way is to use something that encumpasses the character like a sphere and add an animated texture to the sphere. Oh course the sphere will have to use a mask so that the parts of the texture that are not visiable hides the spheres geometry. I'm not yet that good with DB, maybe someone can give you a lil code.

Uhm another way to get an effect is to connect a particle emittor to your character and play with the settings to get what you want, and you will use one of your lighting textures that will need to have an alpha values so that the particles will blend, its the same as the mask on the sphere I mentioned, it hides the geometry and just shows the texure.

If I find any sold examples I'll post em.

G'day

My idea for a shield is clone the object (whatever it's form) make it 110% bigger and add a transparent animated texture on it. Maybe add some strobe light and there you go.

Check out that for my fire code. Replace the texture with blue fire or anything you want, and fiddle around with the values. It doesn't use DBPro particles, but textured planes, and they're better .

Trying is the first step towards faliure.
