I have 3D gamestudio 5 (A5 - don't ask) and it has a free model thingy. I made a model, animated it and exported it to 3ds. The animations magically disapeared (and the textures) and the animation (what is left of it) is in single frame models. So I gave up.

Now I need a new (prepably X. exporting) model software (NOT MILKSHAKE!!) that is very very cheap/free. I had a look at The Decoy animator, but the link to download it is severed. Oh well. HELP!

I don't know 3d gamestudio 5, but my guess is that your model is a mesh deformation type. That is, animated with a skeleton. The 3DS format will only support a hierachial type model, limbs linked to a parent mesh. Thats why the animations disappear.
Very generally, there are two types of .X file, if indeed your animations are mesh deformed, you'll need the directX 8 or 9 type of X file. Previous versions only support hierachial animation.
To be honest the best DX9.X exporter that isn't part of a professional package probably is Milkshape. Unless anybody knows of a better exporter for the money, it looks like thats your only option for now.

For a little bit of coin (around $15) you can get CharacterFX. You're free to create your mesh in any program that can write .X and finish the animation in CharacterFX.

Milkshape 3D, Metasequoia LE, DoGA CGA... there are plenty of cheap or free .X modelers out there.

Another path is to use trueSpace. It takes time to learn the interface, but everyone who does seems to like it.

Blender 3D now has .X export, but I don't know if it has animation support or not.
