i have placed a sound in my main loop for when the "W" key is pressed (a footstep sound) and im getting an error "sound already exists on line 154". the game loads fine, yet as soon as i press the "w" key it stops and gives the error! i already have an ambient sound in my game (i not sure if that matters).

cheers.

are you trying to load the sound into the same number as the ambient sound or are you loding the sound within your main loop?
like mr flibble says, without a bit of code its hard to know

Yes, the sound must be loaded before the main loop or else your code will try to load to load the sound over itself which results in your error. It must be that you are not playing the sound at each "w" keypress, but you are loading it. Else the prog wouldn't have launched.
