I think it's in the Modifier List called Optimize

I am the game and I want to play.

yes, and its something you should never use. Just model your characters at the polygon count you need them. The only decent use for optimize is to create LOD meshes. but even then you should go in an clean them up.

Hi Matic,
My favourite tool, Polychop is an excellent free Max plugin that allows you to retain texture coordinates and lock selected vertices.
http://www.cadalyst.net/extras/plugins/Modifiermax5.html
Search the page for polychop
Its also available for other versions of max

We also sell a good polygon reduction tool called Action3d, look under the 3D Modelling tag at the top of this page.

Nvidia's melody also has a mesh reduction facility, its free, although I've had plenty of problems with it

You will probably want to clean up your mesh manually after reduction, but all of these tools are a good way of quickly reducing the resolution of a model.

With Rhino3D you can make a NURBS model and convert it into a polygon model, and chose how much polygons you want.

in Milkshape there is a "Direct X Mesh tool" or something similar, that lets you reduce the polys in your mesh. you have to fix the smoothing groups afterwords though.

Id suggest reading the 3DS Max manual (the huge thick one that came with it) to learn the ins and outs of a very expensive and powerful program. It bewilders me to think how all these people can afford 3DS Max....its way to much for my budget!
