i've noticed that the 20-liner challenge doesn't seem to be interesting as many people as it used to.
and also noticed there are a couple of
'Make a game in 7 days' ... things going on.

Why not change the 20-liner forum to just the Challenge forum.
Setup rules for each type of challenge to be judged upong, then each month select the best completed challenge.
I really like the idea of the 7-Day Challenge

Sounds good to me.

I would still be inclined to set a size limit, otherwise people will drag in their predefined routines and newer coders won't get a look-in.

I dont know about the seven day thing, I could easily make a bunch of programs in over seven days and just submit them saying it took seven. This would mean that would have to run off of the coder's honesty, and honestly I doubt most people would be honest. However, the idea of new challenges would be good, something to spice up the dying boards. I would be more than happy to see something different in those forums, something for the average coder to strive for.

you would have to give the topic or theme when the competition starts, that way it will discourage people from working too far ahead.

Aye, and the point is to challenge yourself and maybe gain some praise and some expertise in game development. Personally, taking away the prize aspect would eliminate cheating since the contributors would only be cheating themselves. If someone is so desparately in need of attention that they have to cheat, they have bigger problems than a simple contest.

i think the rules for it should state that you must keep a development diary of each day's work.
that way it would be harder to cheat.

that said yes this would really be against yourself so it would be pointless. Lee did a few 24hr challenges in DB to get up it's profile when it first was released. So it is a good challenge

The only way I see of doing a time-limited compo is to specify specific coding techniques.

For example:
Write a proggy with no IF blocks
Write a program that includes a prewritten function
..
.

It would work fine for the game in a week thing... Just have them tell you the theme the day before or something.
