As you may or may not know, I like to keep my email address private. I've set up an alias to it "dbp@fuzzee.co.uk". I use that email address as my login for either LLRGT or these apollo forums. So, put otherwise, the only places that know about the dbp@fuzzee.co.uk email address are TGC and the LLRGT operator(s). The question is now, why am I getting spam to dbp@fuzzee.co.uk? Do TGC sell their email addresses? What about the operator of LLRGT? Has anyone else has a similar experience? I'm not annoyed (perhaps a bit), I'm just curious...

You've posted your email address publically - see the little email button under your post?

It's simply been harvested from either this site or LLRGT.

You can't visit the forums if you're not logged in... I'm saying that how can an email harvesting bot get my email address if in order to see the forums you need to log in.

Oh ok then... I assumed that because you can't see the forum button you can't read the forums It's no biggie, I can just delete the alias and change to another - you gotta love owning a domain.

I doubt that the email was harvested from these forums. My own email does not receive much spam, yet it has been posted on these forums several times.

And I get none at all - I have had some from the @codingarea.co.uk address, so all I did with that was take out the direct link and change it...

The link to the forum appears on the left menu of every page and is in the drop-down menu as well (under Community).

You do not need to be logged-in to access it. It is well indexed by Google, so any email harvesting spam bot could pick up someones email address if they've gone and set it in their "Public Email Address" section of their Profile.

Cheers,

Rich

But an interesting point, maybe you should only be able to see the email button if you are logged in (and the user has it enabled), that way people can still read the forums without logging in but the emails won't be visible.

That or we should all stick "No spam mail" signs on our email boxes... works for junk mail.
