I just downloaded the personal learning edition of Maya. Would this be a good 3D modeler for me to learn? Or is there another one out there that would be more worth my time.

Maya PLE is only useful if you're going to use Maya which means either you have to pay big bucks for it or your employer is going to/has already done so.

Side note, Gamerversity is supposed to be offering a Maya class later this year. I image that they'll be using Maya PLE. If you're serious about learning it, that might be worth looking into.
