"Sales of game hardware and software are expected to continue to beat out Hollywood box office revenue annually, but game software sales alone should be able to outdo movie box office within the next five years, according to forecasts from the International Development Group."

The games industry continues to grow and grow, and even now there's more money in games than in Hollywood movies. Then, how come it's so hard to make money on games these days? Piracy can't be the whole problem, if there's such an influx of cash?

Or?

They SAID that given enough time a million monkeys with typewriters could recreate the collected works of William Shakespeare... Internet sure proved them wrong.

Because movies are pirated just as much as games can be. In the Philippines, movies are released fairly late, so pirated movies come out very early in our case, usually weeks before the movie even screens here.

Of course, my family buys original DVDs

There's a lot of money in games, but it's split up among so many people. The biggest shares usually go to the ones who did the least work, and probably know the least about game development.

The money for games is mostly on consoles. More DVD's sell than games, but they are much cheaper.

Because to make money you have to have money.

Because it's hard to find decent independant games amongst all the single level matrix world demos of MMORGS.

Because magazines wont touch your work with a bargpole unless you advertise with them.

Because developing and releasing software for the consoles has been kept deliberately difficult.

As much as I dislike the reality of that statement, I understand the need for tight control. Just look at what happened to Atari back in the 2600 days to see how too much of a good thing devalues the media and drives companies out of business.

Bah, that's just an excuse cooked up by the suites to earn more money. Companies that go out of business do so because they aren't selling enough of their product, not because they aren't paying a license fee.

All these fees do is completely illiminate free enterprise and independant game development.

When was the last time you saw a truly original game on a console? The sheer cash and development weight of the giants simply cannot create the diversity of an open market.

Ironically, these license fees are an example of capitalism defeating itself with capitalism.

And keep the company alive. There have to be some limitations. It's simple corperate logic.
