Not usually one for 2d but recently Ive been thinking about messing with proper 2d sprites (not 3d). I was wondering if there is any way to smooth sprites with the background - soften the edges so that they dont look as crisp

Heres an image from shareware game CrimsonLand - Im not totally sure whether this is true 2d or psuedo 3d, but I am aware that it used DX7.

Notice the guy in the left middle. Rather than the objects etc standing out they seem to blend with the ground. Anyone know how this could be done in 2d?

Cheers

I suppose you could dither the alpha layer, but don't ask me how you would do that

If anyone can give me any info whatsoever on the alpha layer, how it works etc, then please post it here as I think that it could hold the key

Hi MOONSHiNE,
don't know what art package you're using but get something that can use .png format (Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop etc) then you can access the alpha layer easily. I use png's for everything.

In DBPro, if necessary, you can always change the SPRITE DIFFUSE setting but you should be able to get the effect you want using .png images.

Thanks. I have PhototShop but I couldnt access the alpha channel, even when I saved an image as a png and loaded it back in.

Sorry I'm not a Photoshop user but from what I remember you can easily adjust it by just changing the opacity of your layer.

I'm sure others can give better Photoshop advice.
