I can think of speed but which way does it go...please help..?
I dont mean to ask too much but whats the good and bad to it as well?

Light Mapping is when you add the generated shadows etc to the Texture for your models.

Using lights makes these shadows in real time ( but can be really, slooowwww ).

Thus, Light Mapping is much less speed intensive, as once the Texture's been Light Mapped, you don't have to worry about lights at all after that ( unless of course you want ambient lights etc ).

wow...thanks thats cool...so i guess i would have to use lights for the flicker effect.

Yep, you sure would...

A perfect example of a great Light Map is Walabers Snow Ball Fight Demo ( Can be found in the WIP forums I think ). Both his levels are light mapped, and they look great.

Another good use for light mapping is that you can set parts of the model to 100% ambient lighting via textures. This is great for adding glowing engine parts, little windows to ships and buildings, or Tron-like glowing features.
