Japers Capers is a Monkey Island Type game. It's set in the victorian era, and features Jack The Ripper, and a lot of famous faces.

Here's what the rendered graphics will look like! This is only about 80% finished! The whole scene will be rendered in the end. Even a horse, and carriage.

This looks great! Nice artwork, it'll take forever to make a whole adventure game of this quality, but I'm sure it'll be worth it, I love the Monkey Island type games

It's not Cell shaded, just textured normally. There will be a lot of Photoshop work added to the finished picture. Things like mud will be added to the road.

Added a few more details. This is all rendered, and modelled with Anim8or by the way. Anim8or is free, and can be found here...

So how are you loading a rendered 3D Model?
Whenever I render an object it just gives me an image.

There are a lot of games that look 3D but could be done in 2D. The Sims, Sim City, even Tekken can all be done with rendered images. The advantage is 30,000 polygons are now 2 Polygons. Imagine the speed increase. This game is 2D, but with these rendered graphics, and a character that can walk around the screen in the X/Y/Z. Z is achieved by scaling the character as he moves.

Looks ever better . How many 'screens' of content do you expect there to be in the full product?

Better still, images rendered like these canbe touched up with more effects in packages like photoshop, or you can get rid of parts you dont like etc

looking really impressive!! Making a pre-rendered game is a lot of work... but you're off to a great looking start!

speaking of starts, how's barricadium coming along?

Well, ideas keep coming along that stop a project in its tracks. Barricadium is having a rest. It just needs collision. All of these projects are feeding each other. The collision for Barricadium is coming from Bugaboo. the models for Terrortory required some practice at modelling which is coming from Japers Capers. So here I am getting ready to make human Models, but practicing with buildings first. The thing I am getting used to is cutting new faces. This is new to Anim8or, and is the most useful thing I have found. There will be scenes in Japers Capers that are made in different ways. I might even make a tree generator for some of the levels. A 2D tree generator. The scenes will be touched up in Photoshop. Some of the stretched textures will be fixed, like on the edge of the path.

So what you can expect is a release of a few games all within a few weeks of each other, because they are feeding each other. That's a good way to make games.

Looking nice, those models are very impressive, and I like the idea of a pre-rendered game. Just a few questions: Will the people also be pre-rendered, or will they be fully 3d? I know most 2-D games (what few there are) coming out today use a 2D background and 3d models for units/people, but I guess I was just interested in how you planed on going about that.

So, ok, I only had one question. Keep it up- I'll keep my eye on this project.

The People are pre rendered as well, although not with much detail. I have to add most of the detail in an art package. The pre rendering of people is mainly to get the animation, and lighting correct.

lovely renders pincho,
especially the lighting. very nice job.
this is going to look very cool.

what software are you using to model the obs and render them?
I'm asking as I know renders are time consuming computation wise, and being able to farm out your work for the initial renders may help you get your graphics done faster. I'd be willing to devote some of my spare CPU time to your renders, you know, when i'm asleep.

regards, geecee3.

PS. I have a 5 machine network at home running Bryce Lightning and it eats massive renders for fun!
I also use TrueSpace and GameSpace.

I think that the DB 3d engine restricts people being able to have 3d characters on Pre-rendered backgrounds. It is possible, but its very slow due to the massive use of the paste image command.

@MOONSHiNE

I think he plans to have the images as textures on plains in a 3d environment, removing the need for slow 2d commands. Texture filtering may make the game appear slightly different on the various graphics cards doing the rounds, but that's not a major issue I don't think.

regards geecee3

The characters are 2D. They just look 3D. The buildings render in just 1 minute. The people render in 1 minute as well. I am using Anim8or for the buildings, and Poser for the people. Actually 3D people would not slow DB down anyway. This pre-rendered stuff is just stuck on Plains. You could easily have 3D people on there, but Japers capers has a locked camera, so there is no point in making it 3D.

Here's another pic.

Here's a Hansom Cab. The horse is off 3D Cafe, and is just there to demonstrate the cab. my horse will be 2D. This is probably my best 3D model.

Well games are often pre-rendered, only recently with the extra speed of computers have they started making games like Sim-City real 3D. Sim City was always pre-rendered in the past.

I like pre-renderd games, sometimes the extra detail is not worth abandoning for the sake of being able to move the camera.

Yeah I like them too. Rollercoaster tycoon is a good one as well! They have each image at 4 different angles so that you can sort of rotate the scene. I might have a few angles on some scenes as well.
