Working on a new space strategy in DB [not pro]... Dark Galaxy [might not keep that name - but must call it something for now]

EDIT: Please let me know if the FPS are ok on YOUR system [please give fps and your system specs - thanks!]

Now THAT'S a nice looking game. How's the camera going to work, if it's a strategy game wouldn't the player need a view with a 3d perspective, maybe a birds-eye view.

WAS DOING AN FPS BUT RAN AWAY AND STARTED ON MISSILE COMMAND INSTEAD.

Thanks for the comments

The player can actually move the camera anywhere they want (easily pull back and up for a more isometric view) Also- the game actually automatically does that when selecting new building construction.

It looks very attractive, but what about your repoman car race? Have you abandoned it?

Thanks for the comments!

- No. I havent abandoned REPOMAN entirely - just cant seem to get the FPS up to where it needs to be. So Im taking a break from it.

- Yes. I guess I need to change the name LOL.

Here's another screenshot showing a few alien enemy probes destroying some mining towers.

Thanks

Ive placed an early demo on my site [hoping people could test?]

Heres a link for DEMO and screenshots
http://www.lasthalfofdarkness.com/darkgalaxy

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ENTIRE GAME YET - just hoping people could help me out and let me know if the FPS are ok on their system. Please list the FPS [click on stats in the game] and your system specs.

I still have a bunch to add - but not sure if the FPS are ok on all systems. It runs ok on mine which is a p4 2.5ghz - 512 RAM and 64 meg video - but not sure about everyone else.

Thanks

Ok. I downloaded your demo. Firstly,

- The UI is very well constructed.
- Music is very good!
- The graphics look good

I did, however, find it a little difficult to place my building and such. Just different than I'm used to (i.e. Warcraft, Emperor: Battle for Dune). But I am quite impressed so far. I got a framerate between 24 and 33 FPS.

AMD Athlon 2.0 gHz
512 MB RAM
GeForece4 Ti 4600

i downloaded the demo and i liked it but my main gripe was how difficult it is to move the camera to where you want it, so the one thing i think you should put in is panning the camera...(you know you move your mouse to the edge of the screen and the camera moves that way...)

[edit] oh yah forgot

10-20 FPS on this system...
512 MBs RAM
1.5 GHZ Pentium 4
Geforce4 MX420

Thanks for comments and FPS info! - im getting a little scared at the low fps since i need to add much more.

yeah... the building placement is a little screwy (theres a complex algorithim necessary to place the object in the screen in relation to the current camera angle and mouse position)- ive posted in the db forum about this - but i guess no one knows how to do it?

I've uploaded another newer version [see link above] Please post your fps/system info if you try it out - thanks!

NEW VERSION UPLOADED... See link in above post.

I need some suggestions on how to make the game more fun!
Im planning on adding BASE, CARGO WAREHOUSES, etc. - but not sure how to implement this stuff. Employee management? Would that be fun or just too much micro management?

ALSO: Has anyone with a 32 meg video card had a chance to play? Just wondering if it works with 32 meg card. I know it works with 64+ but not sure about low end video cards

Thanks

looks good, i like the way you can move into the planets, also i think you need to add panning, it's not that hard, i am making a game where it does that.

also for unit placement, you should make the building follow the cursor, and then when they click it builds it, that would be better, much less ockward.

also i couldn't get power to my buildings, you should make more power buildings, i find it a little odd at the moment, or maybe you should explain a little more on how to get power. looks pretty good though.

one way you might want to think about uping frame rate is if you are using the matrix commands then replace them with memblock matrix, it is MUCH faster. other then that, i would just looke through you code find things that might be slowing it down and fix them. Also loading too much info, you might want to think about that.

i got 17-20 fps
on a:
p4 2gigs
512 ram
geforce 2, not sure of the type, but it has 64megs
