You will probably want a model making program or buy some models. I bought 3D Canvas PRO. You will also probably want something to make your levels with. I bought Cartography Shop. You may also want something to make sounds with or buy sounds. I bought the sound matter(s) and use sound recorder to mix them. And unless you want to lose all of your hair. You will probably want to go ahead and give up on making a fast and accurate collision system and buy Nuclear Glory Collision for $15. This are just my opinions. It really all depends on what YOU want to do with DBP.

Don't buy anything till you know you need them. Use free stuff like DeleD and Wings3D until you really know your into modelling...

http://www.wings3d.com

DeleD is a tiny bit confuing cos you have to hold shift to select objects and polys. You have to have selected an object before you can select polys, sides or vertices. Use the buttons at the top right to change modes, and the primitives and prefabs are down the side so you can make worlds.

Look into Dark Matter 1 and/or 2. Or buy a model pack that comes in .x or .3ds format.

PaintShopPro is a good all around program that can be used for other stuff other than creating graphics for games.

P.S. PaintShopPro is a photo creating/editing program.Cost roughly $90, but if you goto [href]http:\academicsuperstore.com[/href] you can get it cheaper.

you could model in gmax and export it to .x format with the proper plugin.

Here's a good resource site for gmax plugins
http://www.dsmith.gmaxsupport.com/Essential_Tools.htm
Here's the gmax website.....it's made by the same people who make 3D Studio Max and it's free
http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/

Gmax is a descent modeling program with many features and it isnt too hard to learn how to use......i've been modeling in gmax for a couple years now.

You can also find tons of good models for free online but the drawback is that most of them are high polygon count and are not specificly designed for the video game industry.

http://3dlinks.com <---click the free objects link in the sidebar.

But they make awesome example models for creating your own low poly versions.

i wish the forums here had an edit button for your posts.....

PSP is a good buy also.....it's a great tool for making and editing textures.

I bought my copy a few years ago and i still use it PSP v7.02

the .dds plugin also is a must for psp....it's the best texture format to use for 3D games.

Another tip.......Keep all your textures sized to 256X256 or smaller for best balance between framerate and render load.
