3 Dimensional Chat / .x model has two textures - is it possible to change one during gameplay

Hi everyone - I am using a .x model from darkmatter two which uses two bmp images, one for the person and another for the gun, although when i apply a new texture (such as if inkey$()="q" then texture object), the whole object gets covered in this texture, compared to when the model is loaded. I could change the image of one of the bmp's and the model would load with the new texture but i want to keep this and change the texture as time goes on. Is it possible to texture part of the object with a new image without the whole object taking on this new texture. Thanks for any suggestions.

i've loaded the .x model in notepad and searched for the image filenames and changed the image file path to a different image, as i thought i could swap over models if one model loads with a different texture but changing that meant the model did not load at all, with the message Runtime Error 7018 - could not load 3D object, ah well best keep thinking lol.
