If you gotta really ancient computer, it'd probably be best to re-new it, or buy a new one. (recomended)
Buy a book to learn the language. (optional)
When you start, code pong. (recommended)
Yay. (Required)

I use DBPro, Milkshape and Macromedia Fireworks when I make my terrible attempts at games. For DBPro you'll probably want any video card that can handle DX9 and handle it well. Otherwise just have good stuff, not crap stuff.

As far as starting out with the actual coding, you'll do best to just try and figure it out on your own. Look at the examples that come with DB, check out some of the tutorials on this site, and most of all STUDY the help file. It is your BEST friend!

Well, here are the programs I use:

Software:

DarkBASIC Professional
DarkBASIC Classic
C++ (For DLL's, don't worry about this yet)

Milkshape 3D
Wings 3D
3DS Max 6 (Very Complicated)

Dreamweaver MX 2004 (Web Development)
Paint Shop Pro 7
Adobe Photoshop
Fireworks MX 2004
MSPaint (This can actually be useful)

Heres the hardware that I have:

Hardware:

Video Card: ATI Radeon 5200
DirectX 9.0
256 MB Ram
Intel Pentium 4 Processor (3.2 GhZ)
18" Flat Panel Monitor

There's no problem so large it can't be solved by killing the user off, deleting their files, closing their account and reporting their REAL earnings to the IRS.

Well as for graphic cards you might at least start with a Gforce fx 5200 for £55. The rest of your computer doesn't really matter. Learning DBPro isn't too bad. Learning 3D modelling is the hardest part. 2D graphics are easy, but the quality depends on your art skills. You should take the easy road and start with Anim8or for modelling. Anyone can make a model with Anim8or. Then make a nice easy game like pong, or anything without animation. Even a driving game with simple physics. Or a Space game. A space game is very easy because the graphics are space, and a bunch of spheres. The ship models are easy with Anim8or too.

A cheap nVIDIA card with shader capabilities, say an FX5200 with 128mb would cost around £40. Paint Shop Pro is fine for texturing, and Milkshape is great in conjunction with CharacterFX - so after DBPro, you really need to spend about £100 on software, you can get away with using free modellers, but your still strongly advised to get a decent animation package to go alongside it. Solo developers need decent 3D modelling skills, there's no getting around it.

You can't look at it in terms of outlay though - I tend to say to myself, I'd spend £30 on a game and get a weeks gameplay from it - or spend £30 on Milkshape and CharacterFX and have a better time making your own games.

I know, but I wouldn't recommend DB for someone starting out.
