Hi,
I've just ordered some new memory for my laptop which means switching one of my chips out. I was wondering whether it was possible to pop this chip in the wifes laptop.

The only difference in specs I can see is that mine uses PC2700 and hers uses PC2100. Supposedly pc2700 is backward compatible but crucial of course recommend using the exact type (well they would wouldn't they).

Any advise appreciated.

It probablt depends on the actual make of the chip. One of my mates got a PC2700 for his PC2100 (I believe those are the right figures), and all the comp did when it booted was repeatedly beep. I'd say try it, if it beeps, take out the new RAM.

As long as the Laptop is relatively new, then you wont harm it by putting in bad RAM.

It will beep as Kentaree said, but it will do so in a specific manner, which you should be able to decifer via the manual that came with the motherboard ( or alternatively, the home page ), which will tell you what's wrong.

For example,
short beep - short beep - long beep - repeat
could mean that an AGP ( or equivelant ) card may only be partially inserted, etc etc.

Cheers for that - it sounds like its worth a try - it's a bonus if it works.

The memory is going from a dell to an acer and it wouldn't suprise if dell chips were a little 'special' to prevent this working.

Yes, Dell seem to have a different form of RAM than other comps anyway, it'd surprise me if it worked, or even fitted.

You might want to check the ram voltage and timings, they might be different enough on the 2700's to cause problems.

3.1 ghz Pentium 4

as far as i can see the specs are the same apart from the ddr speed and the overall bandwidth and i'm going from fast to slow so theoretically with both being 200pin SODIMM this should work - find out tomorrow when it arrives
