is it possible to take a returned scancode() number, and have the computer translate it to letters?

no biggy. Probably just create a look up table of all the scancodes. Make an array to hold all the characters and match the scancode to the index value.

There are some functions you might find useful (see: Input Replacements). IIRC these won't work with foreign keyboard layouts. I might be wrong, though.
