2D All the way! / draw sprites last

In my game I have a scrolling bitmap world on top of which I place my sprites. I want to put shadows in between the sprites and the bitmap.

To get realistic shadows that faded around the edges, I knew I would have to use ghosted textured plains. I used the "draw to back" and "draw sprites last commands". The ghosted plain was drawn on top of the bitmap, but it was also drawn on top of my sprites.

How do I get the plains to be drawn under the sprites? Why isn't "draw sprites last" working?
