Well, the best answer to that would be to try out all that you can find to see which one fits you best. For me, I tried several others, Anim8or included, and I hated them all. Then I came upon Wings3D. I loved it! So, that would be my suggestion.

But really, try all of the ones you can find. I'm sure you'll find one that fits you best.

Cheers,
Preston

It depeneds on your modeling style. I find anim8or pretty good, but never got the hang of Wings3D or blender.

Thanks
I downloaded and tried anim8or, and it seems ok. I tried some tutorials and made an object. How do I save an object as a ".x"? dbpro doesn't recognize ".an8" files.

I'm downloading the latest version of blender3d to see what's different and whats better or worse compared to anim8or.

Try JTEdit, it's my prefered modeler. It's a purely Vertex/Polygon modeler, ie, no Nurbs or anything like that.
And it has some stability issues while the main engine is being rewritten. But other than that, I really like. I use it for all my models now.
It also has some nice inbuilt feature like UVMapping and texturing.

Jess.

My point being, no one can tell you what 'the best 3d modeller' is, because everyone has their own prefrences. I like pizza, you like cheeseburgers.

Try Milkshape, 20 bucks. www.milkshape3d.com

Anim8or exports to 3DS, which you can convert to X. DB can load 3DS anyway.

If you have no modelling skills, then DoGA CGA might be the best. It lets you build models from a parts bin where you can re-size, rotate, and place parts to create robots, spaceships, fighters, and other gizmos. It is NOT the most efficent way to build models, but it is fast, easy, and fun. It is a good way to get your feet wet with 3D and perhaps move on to other programs as your needs progress. It doesn't hurt that L1, L2, and L3 are all free and fully functional for model creation.

well you can try Wings 3D in my opinion Anim8or was far too wierd and it didn't gave me the feeling to put anywork to my models. When i tried Wings 3D it was very easy and good. You can box model out of different shapes they offer like primitives or chain shapes. It's not so bad. I still use anim8or to fix minor problems on my models though.

Wings3D has a way more complicated looking interface than Anim8or. I have spent an hour just trying to extrude a face, and never managed to do it. I gave up in the end.

Edit: Actually I was getting Wings3D confused with Truespace.

If you want to export models in Anim8or choose the Object button in the toolbar and choose export. Only exports .3ds though

Watch out with 3D Canvas (the one I use), it has a number of glitches. Freezes somewhat often and screws up models occational.
