They usually get rid of most stuff.

Then get a browser which doesn't make it so easy for websites to install crap on your computer.

I would also recommend winch's advice. Besides just firefox, you might also like Opera which is a complete internet suite (email, irc, rss, and browser with popup blocking and integrated google search) for 3.4mb. It was just recently award the best browser of 2004 award from PC World. Firefox is a good browser but for me, it just doesn't do the job as quick and easily as Opera.

Internet Explorer, by definition, is a security-ridden cave of trouble. You are open to multiple exploits using Internet Explorer such as browser hijacking (what you're experiencing), phishing (the art of crafting a URL which looks like a site you want to visit but takes you to a completely different site), the man-in-the-middle attack which allows third-parties to view what you send over "secure connections" which could potentially allow someone to view your credit card numbers, bank account information, etc. I would highly recommend switching to a new browser, Firefox or Opera would be a good choice.

You can also set the homepage line in IE to read-only. Unfortunately, I've forgotten how to do it...

Also go into your registry and look around in IE. You are bound to find the site address somewhere in there. Usually its in 4 or 5 different files, change them all to the page you want and it will work again.

Not all programs will fix the start page buggers, but this always does.
