Grief, when I had Win9X/ME it was a standard thing to format and reinstall every few months. Was normally too unstable if went longer than that.

WinXP on the other hand seems to be a hell of lot more stable.

Win9X? Either you chuck in a boot floopy (that you made when you installed originally), or change the BIOS to boot from CD (which you may have to do for the floppy anyhows). Then restart the machine. Should ask you if you want to reinstall and gives the option to reformat the drive. Can't remember exactly how it goes (its been years now) but it's pretty straight forward. After it finishes formatting it basically gets on with installing from the CD. If everything goes right, and your hardware drivers can be found on the disk, then you can pretty much go away for an hour (or whatever) and come back when it's done.

Slight note; if you happen to have one version of windows (say 95), and an upgrade to another (say 98), then you should be able to just to the same thing with the upgrade disk, and not have to go back to the original (95) and basically install, then upgrade. It may ask for the original (95) disk mind. Should work on clean installs too (one of my XP's homes is an upgrade, and not the full version, and I didn't have to install 98 first, just provide the disk).

Hmmm I've been running a Windows Me system for 4 years and haven't reformatted...think its past due?


I'm just too afraid to do anything on it. Besides, I lost my windows install cd long ago.

Dunno about ME. I only had it for a small while before getting 2000/XP. Still have a PC upstairs somewhere with it on though. It's only 98 with a few bells and stability issues though (heh, a lot of people prefered fully tinkered with 98).

Of course you can go years without formatting a 9X machine, just starts to get really ratty if a lot is going on. Defrags, cleanups, etc only go so far I find. Is pretty good, but not as great as a complete wipe. You can *feel* the difference if nothing else.

Good old backup I say. No CD? Good time to get XP methinks. But get the full version, otherwise if things go t*ts up then you can reinstall fully.

I formatted Win98 the old fashion way with MS-DOS prompt! It worked! I used the quick format so it might not have gotten a full effect, but now I use my good 'ole WinXP system.

Wow 4 years ME? I cant stand ME I rather put win 98 on a machine (First Edition) then even consider putting ME on a machine. I had ME on my laptop and it nearly killed it... well ok acuatualy that was me almost killing it with a very large hammer from the garage but it was ME that almost drove me to it..... stop staring at me...

same here kain but my win98se is still the same install since i bought this computer. Ive rebuilt the registry slowly back up by hand about 3 times. Im staring down 4 to 5 years.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

I used to do it every 6 months but it sorta got away from me for about 1.5 years...oh well.

all is fast and concise now.

The only time I reformat is when I get a new OS or piece of hardware that requires formatting the computer (usually a new motherboard/CPU). As such, I haven't formatted XP for about 2 years and probably won't for another 2 years either.

for work and stability i like unix / linux / osx, for dicking around with games and nonsense i prefer windows of any kind.

if i had more cash after buying a property i will probably move to SGI again.

I reinstalled Win2K last Friday, but as a second installation on the same partition. I then copied my start menu, and went through each application. If it started, I left it. If it didn't, I reinstalled the app.

Jobs a goodun, now I can delete the old Windows directory...and work out how to stop it thinking it has 2 installations
