Yeah, C++ is just a language, but there are plenty of compilers. Such examples are:

DJGPP (As shown above) (free)
Borland (free)
Dev-C++ (free)
Microsoft Visual C++ (not free)
Microsoft Visual C++ .Net (not free, costs about $100 seperate from Visual Studio)

and a whole bunch more. Take your pick, its the same language for each one.

Cheers,
Preston

You can get a free command-line version of Microsoft C++ 2003 from MS, plus they are currently offering a beta/trial of VC++ Express 2005 here : http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/visualc/

Another 3 free compilers that are available are:
Digital Mars : http://www.digitalmars.com/
OpenWatcom : http://www.openwatcom.org/
Cygwin : http://www.cygwin.com/ - really a Unix environment for windows, with the GCC compiler

Oh, and Mingw (GCC compiler), but thats the compiler used by the Dev-C++ IDE

Visual C++ 2005 is just awesome for saying it's free.
There are some obviously cut-backs like Win32 stuff you can only compile CommandLine projects, but for .Net you can compile any project.
Plus an express version of MySql (4.0) and MSDN
You also can't create resources, which means applications have to be hand made. The beta doesn't say these features are not available just for the beta though; simply says 'Feature not Implimented Yet' which suggests there might be a download futher down the line for them as they're developed

Hower one statement to add:

Borland (free)::

Borland Builder C++ 5.5, Command Line - Free
Borland Builder C++ 6.0, Command Line - License Bound, but Free
Borland Builder C++ Enterprise, IDE - $75

There is also Codewarrior
However I'd suggest starting by using C rather tha C++ in GCC (availabled with Mingw) and learn the basics of how C works, then tackle the OO extensions of C++

Goto Id Software FTP and grab Wolfenstein3D. It was created in Borland Turbo C++ 3.0 and compiles under it without editing.
It will give you a small window into how to use the language.

Program Expert, why don't you try them for yourself?

Quote: "which one would you reccomend?"

If you went to 50 different restaurants and asked the waiter for their recommendation on food, you'd get 50 different things. You'll only known which one to try once you try it out and try to use the software.

To follow through though, Microsoft's C++ compilers are the standard of today. Microsoft's C++ compiler isn't going to give you much any multi-platform abilities though. In that case, try MinGW, Codewarrior, or Borland's C++ compiler. (I recnetly tried out CodeWarrior, but wasn't too happy with it. It's generally not going to be good for us hobbyists.)

However, Multi-platform may not be important to you. As you see, depending on what you want it'll slowly guide you towards the right software.

If I were you, I'd try out MinGW, or download Borland C++ 5.0(It's free from [href]www.borland.com[/href]).

Might I also recommend you vist your book shop and pick up a book on C++.

Aren't you glad you finally found it.

A Programming Language is like buying a new games console, there are the popular ones, the powerful ones, and the stable ones.
Although they all do the same job, they have thier own little quirks which make them unique.
It's upto you to decide which variety you prefer...

Personally I use Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 / 8.0 Express, because the IDEs really make things easier for larger projects and the Microsoft syntax appeals to me.
On the other hand my girlfriend only uses GNU GCC (command line) because it works on Linux and she is deathly apposed to any software which requires an EULA.

Neither makes either of us better coders, but it does make our lives easier dealing with languages we enjoy.

Quote: "Would you say thats required?"

I'm not sure what your reffering to, but I think your asking would it be a requirement to learn C before C++, no?

If that's the case then, no you can jump right into C++. The difference is there is alot more to get to grips with, by learning the basics of C first you learn the basis for which really all programming stems from. You will find that Classes and Interfaces within C++ will be easier to understand if your first understand the relationship between Structures and Functions in C.
It's also a case of baby-steps;

Learning to
struct Steps
{
char small;
};

Steps Take;
char One = Take.small;

before you can
struct Steps
{
char small;
} Steps, *pSteps;

Steps *Take;
int *large = *(int*) &Steps;

hehee

@Program Expert.

Please can you reduce the file size of your sig. 140k is too big. Getting it down to around 60k would be better.

Thanks

If you can cut its size down to 60k then you can keep it.

I have broadband, but despite that it still takes an age to open any page you've posted in with that pic. Just think how bad it would be for those still on dial-up.

Have you read anything that anyone has posted here?

There are 7 free C++ compilers listed here, plus variations of levels of each compiler.

Next, reduce the size of your banner picture - its now over 170k. If you don't, I will start to delete every post of yours that I come across. If you *still* don't get the message, then I will start banning you for 24 hour periods until you *do* get the message, or until I get bored of it and ban you permanently.

Reduce the size of your banner.
