Just got in after launching a couple fireworks. Definitly a good fourth of July this year though. Everyone was shooting something off!

Not good for me. There's supposed to be the big firework show in 30 mins, but it's thundering and pouring like mad.

This being the insipid city of Manchester-- the city council has a collective IQ of 15 (all 20 members)-- we had the fireworks last night . Oh well, they were still pretty neat. And we had a good celebration at home .

Yeah, the big fireworks in Utah were all yesterday, because today is Sunday... PLUS we aren't allowed to have fireworks that shoot over like 15 feet unless you have a permit.. so all fountains, pretty gay, except for the rebels around town that shoot them off anyway

Viewed lots of pretty fireworks from our terrace, including East River Macy's display out by Manhattan - neato

Happy 4th to all.

Hehe, sounds like fun! A few years ago, one of my uncles came around with a HUGE set of fireworks, almost all of which are totally outlawed in Utah/Arizona. Roman candles, flying spinners, BIG bottle rockets, and a ton of other cool stuff. Ahh, fun times until the cops came along. They just told us we should be more careful and to be done for the night.

I have a book about firework making, but I'm not quite 21, so I can't easily get all the stuff I need to make them. Plus I don't have enough time.

Edit: One of the funnest "legal" firework in Utah is those ground bloom flowers(with slight modification) I like to put wings on them I've had some go 30 or 40 feet high. Or you can squish them with some pliers around the middle. Makes an awesome firecracker that way.

Eric T- Where do you live? I live in Jackson, Wyoming. Turns out they already blew the fireworks off, which pisses me off because they did it during the big thunderstorm, which was an hour ahead of schedule. All the more reason to torch the entire town! But I found a big bag full of illegal fireworks left from my brother, I'm about to go light some off.

I never did understand this holiday. America celebrates independance from Britain, then one or the other nation goes running to the other any time a war breaks out...

And while we're on weird American things.

What's with wearing white after labor day? Is it some kind of law? Or do you just not like to get things dirty?

Independance Day is when a big flying saucer blows up the white house, havn't you seen the movie. We had Canada day on July 1st that's when all the people waste thousands of dollars on miniature flags and go get eaten by mosquitos until the fireworks start. They were PURTY! I AM CANADIAN!

How about people refrain from bitching about American in an American holiday thread? I think we're entitled to celebrate our birth as a country.

As for wearing white, I have no idea. I don't.

The not wearing white after labor day is an old concept. You were supposed to only wear white between the last monday in may(Memorial Day) and the first monday in september(Labor Day). But I do not know the reasoning behind it myself. But I think it had something to do with white clothes making you cooler in the winter. If I had to guess.

Sorry if I offended anyone - it was unintentional. You guys seem to have a lot of these holidays: Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Independance day, Presidents' Day, Veterans' Day.... I assumed (this may be wrong) that a holiday meant that you didn't go into work.

I wasn't accusing you of being lazy (@Mouse, don't be so on-edge; not everything that passes people's lips is a personal/national attack) it's just something that I've thought about. For example, the best national holiday we have is a bank holiday. What a fine example of patriotism.

Nope. It's different here.

- England (from what I understand): "I'm on holiday" = "I'm off work"
- America: You wouldn't say "I'm on holiday." You'd say "I'm on vacation" which would mean "I'm off work." But we have holidays, like Presidents day, thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. The fact that those holidays exist does not mean we don't go to work (I worked the 4th of July, so I'd know!) That's probably where all the confusion comes in. Heh.

Thanks for clearing that up, HZence. I knew that you guys liked the term "vacation", but I didn't realise that holiday and vacation were not synonymous.

I wasn't trying to be on edge, but we both know how easily these can explode into vicious political debates... I believe last year's ID thread did for example. I was just trying to make sure there wasn't a possibility of that happening. Sorry I snapped at you adr.

Not everyone gets days off on holidays. For example, at my dad's work, there is only one day where work is closed (Christmas) and all the other holidays most people spend their sick days on.

I agree that you guys could do with some more holidays .

No hard feelings ?

If my understanding is correct Americans do have more national holidays than us lime suckers but they have less annual leave than we do, I guess it works out roughly the same at the end of the day (perhaps not the best metaphor... end of the year ).

Quote: "I think we're entitled to celebrate our birth as a country"

Absolutely I agree I just find it ironic that whenever there's a spot of bother in the world our two countries immediately cry to the other for help - yet here is a holiday being proud of independance.

It's all George III's fault anyway, if he'd left Pitt in charge of parliament instead of seeking absolute power of the British empire (then by far the most powerful empire in the world) then the USA would still be English and Spanish, so it's all Germanys fault for breeding a megalomaniac. Hmmm, there's a strangely familiar sound to that... ?

Actually, it's all Ceaser's fault for attempting to sieze power and turning Rome into an empire. None of those people would have existed.

Caesar expanded an already powerful Rome, if you really want to know who's fault it is you need to look further back to the early Egyptian dynasties of Nephertite and that bloke she was married too, probably Rameses seein' as they where all called that.

No wait, the Egyptians inheritted their civilian infrastructure by the simple meens of exanding upon the already existing tribal system, if you really want to know who's fault it is... Look no further than the Apes.

Of course the Apes obly game about because an Amoeba with a bright idea, so I blame the genome.

And as it's the genome at fault, and considering that 60% of the Human race is certifiably nuts, and interestingly the human genome is 60% identical to a banana, then clearly the fault of everything on Earth is the fault of bananas.

Quote: "blame that atom that exploded"

The atom only exploded because time reversed (source: Deliberate miss-interpretation of Stephen Hawkins) so you'd have to blame time, and so if time is at fault then clearly we need to get rid of it - which would have the benefit of never being late for work ever again.

Unfortunately i'm paid on time worked, but a little povery is well worth the price of undoing all the bad in the world.

Of course then there could be no laws restircting the ammount of time worked in a work day. There would not even be a "work day". They could make you work forever without stopping Things are looking better already.

They could indeed have an infinite length working day, but that doesn't bother me at all because the day wouldn't start...

Unless you got rid of time while you were at work
