Question:
I am wanting to do a large outdoor type RPG, my question is what are current RPG Programmers of Darkbasic/pro using for the overall terrain. Based off current tools I would think most people would use Matrix, but I have read a few places where it seems like people are making the main terrain .x or 3ds files and importing them in as objects. Anyone have any comments or suggestions?

Well, im not a very good programmer, seeing how I am a noob, but, I think it depends on the type of RPG, if it is like Final Fantasy 7 then you would want to use .x files, 3d models, but, if it was like 8 or up, then, I would suggest you use matricies

The good thing with .x/.3ds is that:
a---easy to make......point ang click
b---can be made to look better, quicker
c--works more on the concept of art and not programming
d--If you dont like one just delete it and replace it quickly

I use a matrix for The Magic Land. But before you can use a matrix you need an editor. There are lots of free matrix editors out there but I have made my own that can do what I want it to do. Making your own editor is something you all will need to learn someday, better start now.

I use a matrix, made with MatEDIT, textured with textures using vantrans. I may be switching to a world editor by ESC (its amazing)

Ok for the game I am think Matrix is the way to go, the next question is for Dead Glory & RPGgamer. Do you notice a point where Matrix get so big that they start to really slow down DB or DBPro. I created a large Matrix around 200X200 and it seem to slow things down a lot. Are you using smaller Matrixes?

If you want any reliable collision vs. the ground, you have to use a matrix for now. Only bad thing about a matrix is that the more tiles you have, the slower it goes by a lot.

^_^ kensupen you can always make a matrix from a height map... and i think the level commands are fine...
