Doom3 has been gold for like 12 sodding months, but atleast the extra time gave Carmack enough time to recode most of the engine to be more 'mod' friendly.
XBox version had to be released first though, Microsoft's orders - but only by a day.

9th of August is aparently the official release, or aleast that's what Scott told me.

The Xbox version of Doom 3 may not even be out this year. Looks like I'm getting the PC version!

Contradiction Alert. If you're still modifying the engine (hell, if you're still modifying ANYTHING) then the product hasn't gone gold.

not a contradiction at all...
Doom3 went Gold > Microsoft Licensed the game and said there *must* be an X-Box version released first > Carmack went back to the Doom3 code and decided to completely overhaul the rendering and shader pipeline.

That said Doom3 has been gold again since April, at E3 they were showing off the finished product.
Atleast until Halo we're actually seeing the PC version within a reasonable amount of time.

You know what has passed everyone by, is that Half-Life 2 also went gold 2-weeks ago. I've got HL2 pre-ordered but not Doom3, figure I'm gonna wait til the price break; as for some reason Game didn't put it up to pre-order until like a week ago.

Detail is also lower, example below.

Xbox
PC

If you watch the Xbox Doom3 trailer from E3 this year, you'll notice the framerate wasn't too good either.

The kicker is that the Gamecube version which Nintendo have kiboshed was looking identical to the PC version, ran damn smooth too...
Nintendo want Doom III as a GCA title though; going to get an exclusive story too.

X-Box version of Doom3 does suck a bit though. I mean it looks good, but the controls are too slow... the Box is really begining to show how aged the technology is though, as the Geforce3 just isn't upto keeping up with current games.

If you find Kameo screenshots from the original GameCube engine and put them against what is out now, you'll see there is a huge quality difference; Simply because the GF3 is only capable of 1.3 Shaders which are smaller, not as much definition, etc...

HL2 is suppose to be hitting the XB rather than the Xenon; That's going to be a joke imo, can't see the XB comming close to the PC version in terms of graphics which is gonna hurt sales.

Same here. I can't wait to see what kinds of mods I can work on using the Source engine. Sure, Doom3 will be fun, but I have a feeling HL2 will beat it in the end based on average reviews.

I just know that when I see Doom3 on the shelves in a few weeks it'll be around $79.99CDN and I just can't afford that right now :-P

I've got it the other way around - will probably ignore HL2, especially if Steam is still around...

I saw the E3 promo of the Xbox version (the one of this months Edge), the graphics were nice, but the framerate really didn't look very good.
Frankly, it jerked around like a crock of poo, and that appeared to be when there was only one bad guy on screen.
Maybe they can optimise it enough to get it playing well though.

Tell you what, having a decent spec PC, you really appeciate the smooth framerate compared to some over ambitious console games.

Like Raven, I can't only imagine the Xbox version of HL2 is going to be even worse, if it ever even sees the light of day.
Still, hard to say "No!!" to a sack of Microsoft cash.

Yes I saw it at EB games. It looked like a pre-rendered movie running at 20fps.

EB has the release date of Doom 3 as August 4th. The specs for the game are insane, there's no computer in existence today that can run it maxed with no strong hit in performance. They actually had to tone down the engine so they could run it in resolutions higher than 640*480. Also, I heard that PC Gamer already got their hands on it and gave it a review of 94% which is really damn good. I can't wait to get it, definitely worth $50!
