Hi all,
I'm an experienced programmer in other languages who's decided to finally have a serious attempt at programming a game. I'm fine with coding and algorithms, but fairly rubbish at graphics.

I'm looking into making a simple 2-D platform game, but I was just wondering what are the best programmes/packages for designing sprites. I'm aware of a few of them, but I was just hoping someone would point me in the right direction for this first step at graphical design, rather than aimlessly spending money on something which might be useless (oh yes, preferably free software if it exists out there). I know there are probably other threads about this, but this is just a quickie to get me started so I hope someone can help me out here.

Thanks.

So far I have just been making my images with paint then adding effects with The Gimp 2.0 which is really wonderful and free.

DOWNLOAD "The Gimp" NOW!!!!!

http://www.gimp.org/

You can thank me later!

Come and visit the "2d All the Way Board". 2D'ers need to stick together!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
THE GIMP

It's free, powerful, loaded with plenty of features, Free, great User interface, File format support, User support, and did I mention it's FREE!. On par with PSP in my oppinion. If you are just doing pixel type art, paint is fine. But if you need some blends and gradients and other tools for GUID's or Huds, Layovers, textures, the Gimp will serve you well my friend.

Now stop reading this and download "The Gimp"!!!

Thus, this thread was born.

edit: I'm considering getting my feet wet in programming for my N3650 (It's about time I put this thing to use). Looks like I'll be tinkering around with 2D for a while.

Thanks for the suggestions. The GIMP is now alive and well in my computer.

It's amazing on the other thread suggested above,
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=30080&b=10
how many 3D modelling programmes there are, but so few 2D programmes. Oh well, that's the way things are now I guess.

Time to write a nice simple game. Thanks again

@skeletor, I just now realized that you suggested the gimp. I gues I only read up to "For now I use paint" part, and I saw "which is free!"

So thanks goes to Skeletor.
