Can someone please explain to me how to texture a single matrix cell, so simply that 12-year-old could understand it (i.e. me!)

I think you use the Prepare Matrix Texture command except with values bigger than one on accross/down. You can't texture a single matrix cell, but you can give each cell it's own texture.
