im trying to make a program that responds to what you say to it, but im stuck. ill explain what my code looks like because my DBpro isnt working for some reason tonight(?)

phrase1$ = "hello"
phrase2$ = "hi"

input statement$
print phrase1$
wait key

ok, this is basically what I am trying to do, but is there an easier way of doing this?, and when I imput my statement, the "print phrase1$" doesnt seem to want to cooperate, and not appear.?
