Newcomers DBPro Corner / Battle Damaging Terrain?

Hi,
What would be the best method to make 2d Battle Damaging Terrain (640 x 480 sized map)? I figured it would be great for Artillery Based games.

Like worms? You'd have to use memblocks to speed up the process, but it would involve working out how much terrain was destroyed then redrawing the image and calculating collision on a pixel by pixle basis. So its pretty hard really...
