Geek Culture / Windows XP problems - help appreciated

OK, To the point:

In Windows Media Player and Power DVD, all my MPEG files play jerkily... it's never happened before but I did recently reset ALL settings on my computer including media playing preferences (created and reset a new profile) Any ideas?

If that's vague, I'll post more... this is just the latest problem after a massive crash I've been lucky enough to experience yesterday.

sounds like you lost most of your codecs for a guess, try reinstalling divx and mediaplayer (divx supports mp4 and is is becoming more common), also uninstall and re-install power dvd, that may reset the codecs etc, you might also like to check your directx diagnostics, I guess you have system restore turned off or have tried that already?.

System restore is turned off, and I haven't got the PowerDVD or DivX CD's, they just came with the PC...

arghh!!!

Yeah, problem being you've gone and reset all of the recompiles that Windows XP has done for speed means. It won't recompile these codecs and settings without you reinstalling.

I'd suggest TweakXP though, it should allow you to optimise your system in order to sort everything out. If i were close enough I'd suggest setting up an evening when I could come over and sort out your registry and reinstall Service Pack 1.
lol let it be a lesson to ya not to mess

Oh somethnig you could try is reinstalling Media Player 9. v10 is due out soon (which is SWEET) so you might get the chance to fix everything with the update.

No offence, but sounds like nonsense to me.
Haven't changed the registry.
All that has gone wrong is my profile has become corrupt - causing a knockon effect on everything else. The registry doesn't come into it...

I reckon a reinstall of Power DVD is what you need, unfortunately you have no disc - so you end up having to buy a fresh copy. I installed PowerDVD on a 98se machine with no installed codecs, and it played DVD's and media files perfectly - so I reckon it must have key codecs supplied with it.

You could try the latest version of WinAMP and see how that fares - it has video playback now and might tell you what's up with the codecs when you install.

Another thing to check is the graphics hardware accelleration in set to full. Sometimes when there is a problem windows will turn it off thinking the problem is hardware related.

Its to do with the codec - need to find a better one (or the correct one).

Each profile has its own section registry - tat's why you have HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Windows basically works from the registry, almost exclusively.
Files you can simply reinstall, this is any file; the registry however you must be careful about altering as it controls your entire system.

There are normally 4 Sections...
/Root/
/User/
/Machine/
/System/

Your settings will be stored on /User/ControlSet/
Anything is altered in there it will adversly affect your entire system. Particularly if it becomes corrupt.

The actual system <user>.pwl doesn't actually matter at all because it is rebuilt each time you login.
Your software is intern controlled via /User/Software/Microsoft/
There is a second set of this in /System/Software/Microsoft/
Knowing what settings to alter takes a good knowlage of Windows backbone.

as I said try downloading TweakXP, it should fixx things.
Registry Mechanic isn't free but again will fixx major problems.

Wait, your MPEGS play badly? Hmm. Try setting your to play MPEGS with RealPlayer.

download Divx player, they include their mpeg codecs in that and they support mpeg`s up to 4, they seem to work in Mediaplayer too since my logitech digital camcorder toy uses mp4 and mediaplayer can play the mp4 files ok, (although it may be that a mediaplayer update supported MP4, but I think all codecs are normaly shared with the system).

I do hate REAL Player...

No luck with either new codecs or DivX codecs from the official sites, REAL player or WinAMP (These came with my PC, but I don't like them...)

A virus is out of the question - my PC is not connected to the internet and I really don't ever take files to it... I don't even have ANY pornography on it! It's an isolated virgin beauty of a machine, with little to no contact with the outside world...

I did virus check btw with the NORTON stuff that came with, but nothing came up and besides I smell a profile related problem here...
