has anyone ever used SUSE Linux?

What your opinions on it?

*and before anyone says anything - i know linux is a mad idea*

I used to have 8.0 - the update system could be dodgy and of course it didn't recognise my ADSL USB mode...
And of course, being Linux the layout was rather messy.


I came, I saw and I forgot all about it... or something...

If you really want to try it, you can dowload a full free version of their website as a .iso file, so you can burn the image directly onto a cd. I did it, but gave up because it has no support for my modem.

i've tried the live cd and i thought it was good

i was just wondering if people like this version of linux and whether the incluided apps are any good

Yes, Suse is my favourite Linux distro, 9.2 is very sleek. But if you have a BT Voyager 100 USB modem, don't bother!

i connect to the internet through a netgear wg311 (wireless) pci card to a netgear router which connects to the internet

is this supported?

If I were phoenix insane Surreal Studio, I would check the RedHat hardware database (http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/) Yes I know it's Redhat not Suse, but they are basicly the same.

SuSE would be the distro I'd use if I couldn't get RedHat running. Personally, either of them is fine but overall I've found RH to be a bit better with hardware support, but compared to Mandrake, Slackware, and Debian (the other popular distros) SuSE is excellent. In fact, Linus Torvalds the creator of Linux says he used SuSE at work and RH at home. So I'd say go with which ever one you like better they're both essentially the same and quite good.

i like osx but im a mac nut.

suse has many key commands similar to windows so its a good transition but its no slouch under its belt and can perform quite well as a linux distro.

redhat or fedora is a good stable linux distro thats earnt its place and grown to be a good solid version of the distros around.

the reason i like SUSE is because it uses the KDE and i like it's installer YaST

If your in the UK, the Linux magazine has the full version of Suse 9.0 Professional on its cover disk.

Question: Anyone know of how the hell to get rid of On-Track? It won't let XP / SuSE bootup... have a feeling that could be why the installation failed to.

I mean it's all installed and everything but the damn thing doesn't boot up into the UI like it did. Using Linux from the Root is not my idea of fun. Especially as you can't scroll (or damn well pause) screens of more data than the res allows.
