1)Can shadows be created using .X format objects. E.G I make a ship and save it as an .X object. can that ship cast a shadow on a matrix floor?

2)Are .X format objects quicker to load than .3DS formats?

3)Is it true that version 5.4 of DBpro cannot support .3DS formats?

1) Not by itself.
2) Yes, and .DBO is even faster.
3) Haven't tried it yet.

In the program announcement board there is a thread about a DBO convertor that you can download.

1) To create a shadow, it is best to create a small program that will look at the object from the top down with the background black and the object gray with no lighting, then save the image. You can use this image on a dark ghosted plain for a great shadow effect. However, it will only work on flat surfaces. You could rotate the plain to go on a hilly matrix, but it may look odd at some angles.
