Its still an early beta - im using animated compressed video sequences and I need people to test to make sure the animation plays back correctly. Ive had some computers not show the animation sequences due to a possible missing codec.

Please help me by testing this program here (screenshots and early demo):

http://www.lasthalfofdarkness.com/newlasthalf.htm

Its sorta big at 36MB - so you probably dont want to mess with it if you have dialup?

Thanks

Dude! Those screenshots look awesome! You have some serious cool issues, man... My DSL is only getting about 35k now (AARRRGGGG!) but I'm downloading now... Can't wait!

very nice demo man, i love the creepy atmosphere!
It works fine on my comp, apart from a few weird screens when the vids are starting.
Other than that, great start, i'm looking forward to seeing some progress on this project

it's nice, no problems here, I remember the 7th guest game, but this is how old? 10 years ago? I think it's too much, you're using very old technology when you could use 3d or dinamyc game play, cause I think this kind of games are very statics, sorry, but it's my opinion, anyway I like, keep on it.

Grismald: Thanks for taking a look - what weird screens do you mean? some white flashing when first starting up the game? or during the game? Does full-screen animation work ok (when moving upstairs, etc.)?

SamCameron: Thank you too. Yes it's a little static. I plan on adding some dynamic 3D action too. (such as the dungeons beneath the house) But I've done it this way because I cant seem to get the quality of graphics I want in a "real-time" rendering environment. (shadows/lighting, smooth surfaces, etc.)

Thanks

Ooooooo... Ahhhhhhhh...

Way cool. Is it gonna be a Myst type game with fiendish puzzels and traps, or something else? Either way, it's cool. Way cool. You gotta love them transitions effects!

Pretty creepy, as well... All you need now is some bleeding walls and misty fog to complete to picture

Can't wait to see what you make out of this...

~Hawkeye

btw, I just had a thought as I was typing this... Someone needs to make a gothic horror/survival horror/DOOM/general all around creepy game contest... You could make little dancing zombie/flaming skull screensaver prizes, as well... hehe, that's pretty good! TCG should try it sometime...

Thanks Hawkeye! Glad you like it. Yes it will be like Myst sorta with puzzles.

I appreciate you taking a look - I guess it worked ok, huh? My main concern is that the full-screen animation works ok (like when you walk upstairs)

Thanks again.

alRIGHT! A gothic horror spin on Myst... Gotta love it!

Yeah, the animation was fine. It was just a little bit stuttery (this was on the opening staircase thingee.) I think the framerate was just a little bit down there, causing the skipping... But it's nothing to worry about, it looks fine.

A minor suggestion, though... You need more than one piece of music. That sudden jump 2-3 secs in getts repetive after 1/2 dozen rooms or so... You don't need anything major, just some wispy chords kinda floating around... btw, what do you use to make your music? I'm always looking for new toys...

btw, my pc specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.08 GHz
NVIDA GeForce 4 MX
512 megs of DDR SDRAM

If I get a chance, I'll see how it works on my other PC... Might take a bit though, I don't have a LAN setup or anything

Thanks game wiz, Hawkeye,Nemesis_0 and Bartlett for taking a look!

Yes the music needs to be less repetative - i didnt make that music - it was made by a friend (not even sure if it will get used in final)

Yes this is done in DB.

Demo and screenshots here:

congrats on a great looking game you have inspired me to get back to making my adventure/puzzle game the animation was good but going up the staircase hangs a bit then jumps forward a few frames, i like the torn paper bit in the inventory but it semms that some of the contol points are a little off on it but i know it is still in a WIP stage
thanks for sharing

Very nice looking game. The smooth transition between some sections is very cool. Putting the ingrediants list together is very good. Overall, a fantastic looking game. Keep it up.

That's pretty awesome!
The animations I saw only ran in the foyer and when you came into the room and you say the dead dude in the chair and the scary lady get blown apart, I'm guessing. Of course there's still the jumpy staircase, but other than that everything ran quite fast. Can't wait to start figuring out what to do with that ingredients list.

Doh. So really it's just a bunch of pre-rendered pictures?

ran well for me, except sometimes a strange flash between scenes where the colors were all messed up (it looked like a 16-color version of the image, and lasted for maybe 10ms).

otherwise nice interface, smooth presentation, overall very nice.

and the art was beautiful of course

rpg_freak there are no levels these are all prerended scenes and animations where he has just added hotspots in DB for the interactive bits, this can be achived by adding a plain that when clicked loads up the next image

Thanks for the comments! - yes it pre-rendered pictures - I needed to do it that way to get the quality of shadows and lighting i needed - however - some real-time 3d rendering will be added to the dungeon area under the house.

Thanks

It wasn't as scary as I had hoped, but everything plays nicely. On my computer, the video is a little jumpy in terms of framerate, but that's ok.

When I only thought there were the two scary video things (Skeleton in the chair, Strange lady turns into bats and flies away), I saw another one when I was in the dining room. The strange lady appeared again, and it kinda made me jump.

I have to say young man that this is an excellent start to your game.
I sincerely hope that you will persevere with it and not let it fall by the wayside.

The graphics are aimed just right, and apart from more music/sound FX and the odd spot 3D animation within the pictures, the game should become one of the community’s better achievements in DB.

You deserve a pat on the back for this, so well done, and keep up the good work.

Very nice indeed. No graphic problems whatsoever. A bit too much like 7th Guest and 11th Hour though, so hopefully rest of game will diverge a bit. At least make the mansion layout a bit different!

Bet you can't come up with puzzles as devious as in those two games though! They had me stumped for months.

lol,

btw, billy777... How do you get to the dungons beneath the house? I can't figure out how to get there

Oh yeah, and I changed my mind about the music... It really adds to the scare factor after you get to the strange woman in the dining room... The repetiveness is good after that bit.

you are a fool for coming heeereeeeee...

Holy POO!

I played through the online version late at night....then it told me to look in the attic...AH!

That was pretty cool.

I'm guessing that the $12.99 version is the full version of this demo? I wasn't too impressed before, but once I played the online version....my interest was piqued.

Hawkeye: Did it scare you? Thats good. The underground dungeons are not in that demo - I have another demo, but its 90+ meg that has the realtime 3d movement when you go into a painting. But its nothing special yet.

Bear Crazy Donut: Yes the online version is a little more playable - just not much in the way of music, video and special effects. Glad you enjoyed it.

NOTICE TO ALL

just a warning!

this is not real time rendering.

it is just movies played.

you can not wander at will.

having said that it still must have been a load of work to make all those models and render them with the camera in a just so position

great job!

BTW if i am wrong and this is all real time rendering then forgive my ignorance

Thanks for the comments n0id and Peter...

Yes...The current demo does not contain any real-time rendering - however - the finished game will contain some real-time rendering (when inside the dungeons) I needed to have pre-rendered scenes to achieve the hi-quality shadows, lighting, etc.
