I have an old dbpro version installed that only needs directx 8.1 but I have directx 9.0 on my system. Does dbpro use the installed directx version to save files? I mean, why can't I save files in 8.1 anymore?

Thanks for any insight

Because you have 9.0 that's why. DirectX overwrites old versions, while still remaining backwards compatible (for the most part).

Save files? Do you mean compile, or files that are saved from code?

Since DBPro update 5 (or 4 can't remember) it's become fully 9.0b reliant. The target machine needs that on.

If you have an older version and have DX9 installed, it shouldn't make a difference. I suggest upgrading, anyway.

Yes, I mean compile. I have an older DBPro version that works with 8.1

I want to make an app.exe thas is directx 8.1 compatible. RobK told me that even the bluegui and (blue)menues PlugIn work with 8.1. This is the standard in WindowsXP. No one will install directx 9.0 a or c just to see a simple application. Downgrading is not simple with a Microsoft product.

1. Is there a way to compile in a specified directx version
2. Do I have to Downgrade my directx version and it works with 8.1 again

This whole issue seems to be more complicated than I thought.

1. No.

2. The version of DX required isn't affected by what you have installed on your system. It will always require DX 9 or better.

9.0 is standard with XP now - with SP2 you get 9.0c

@Rob K

I have a DBPro version that requires directx 8.1.. As I started it compiled DX8.1 - I did the upgrade to DX9 because of CShop and its 3dview. Rob K, do you know where I can find this DLL? I want to test it. (Or didn't you mean that BlueGui runs without DX9?)

OK, but most people still don't have SP2. It's not a solution to include a notify on the CD-Cover that says "SP2 required". It should just start even without SP2!

It works fine without any SP - the point is, you are notified in the download area that DBPro uses DX9. The latest games are starting to use it now anyway.

Anybody who plays games, and subseqently anybody who will play your game needs the lastest DirectX. It's that simple

Your old version is probably pre patch 3 or roundabouts. I strongly suggest upgrading!
