Hi Folks,
well here is my graphical masterpiece Serpentile!

It's far from finished graphically, but the game engine itself is running pretty nicely. At present it handles just like a standard
snake type game, now I'll be adding the window dressing to it and the extra options such as more levels and different things for the snake to do. At present the snake graphic is just a place holder. I do have a better one planned.. honest..

It's a 2D game, if you have any feedback on the screenshots, please feel free to email me or let me know here.

If people are interested I might release a small demo of it later this week (say over the weekend) with a level or 2 in the game.

Thanks for looking..

Well I wanted the snake to have a bit of challenge, so I was
thinking about some walls (obviously?), maybe something along the
lines of some warp holes as well, hit a warp hole and appear elsewhere on the screen. Also thinking about a bonus round where you need to eat as many items as possible in a restricted time period. I did want to keep level one as close to the real thing as possible, just to retain some of the feel of the original.

I also will be making later levels a little more flexible, .ie. no border/boundary, the snake will be able to travel from one side of the screen to the other just by exiting say at the right and appearing at the left.

Well it's timer based movement.
at level 1, it's moving every 175ms so that would equate to about
6 frames per second. I mean after all it's only a snake wandering
about the screen. It's hardly an FPS lol.. since the screen doesn't
have to update all that much info, it really doesn't make any difference what the FPS is. The game is actually playable at about
25ms per turn, which is around 64 frames per second, but it's pretty
damn hard. Might be useful to crank it during the bonus round and turn collision of walls off so people can feel the speed..
I wasn't really aiming for super fluid movement of the snake (well not on level 1 anyway), I did want it to retain some of the feel of the old blocky step by step snake.

Thanks for the comments so far.
I will work at getting a small demo released over the weekend.

Sounds good!

I love the font and the Cartoony style graphics. But in the 2nd Screenshot, does that say "SCORE: WOO"?

This sig has been dullified!

Ok, demo is uploaded..
You should be able to get it from here...

http://members.austarmetro.com.au/~jokerz/jokerz.zip

Basically once you start, its straight into the game.
arrow keys control direction up,down,left,right

wall collision is currently turned off.
eat the frogs, grow in length
7 frogs to eat in the first level

2nd level is greatly sped up
10 frogs to eat
you also grow more segments than you do in level 1

each successive level you will grow more segments when you eat a frog. no other features included yet, although the speed will vary
between levels.

run over yourself on any level and lose a life.
so far no additional lives are allocated.

Anyway, give it a try and let me know if it works for you.
Oh, if you get sick of chasing your tail, just hit q to quit.
escape works too, but I prefer q..

The snake is still a place holder and no special features are released in this demo.

wow, this plays very smooth ive seen more snake games, but this one plays very good. keep it up!

You could make the snake tiles a little more detailed, than it would look awesome, and what about a landscape? with trees and rocks that you not may hit, just like the walls.

good luck!

syntax error??? it isn't an error, it is a feature

Just a graphics update.
I got my new snake all encoded and got it cornering nicely.

so here is an updated screenshot..
added a stone (and later some bushes) to stop movement (as suggested by Jopie)
and the beachball thing to eat has now become a frog.

don't forget you can download the demo here..
The demo still contains the old graphics.

yes that stone looks good, if you make a background, grass or something, that will look nice because the current background isn't very interesting to look at , a river in the landscape would be cool too. hmm .. im going a little to far..

A background eh?
Well if I made it green grass, might be a bit hard to see the snake and the frogs..

I'll see what I can come up with. A background might actually help one of my ideas which is to create warp holes. Now they could become gopher holes.
A river would be ok too, if I can find something suitable, I'll tile it in and see how it looks.

Mr Pet Rat: as for the graphics, they are ones I've found on the internet and ammeded them to suit the game. I can't draw very well at all, but I found I can make changes to graphics easily enough.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it.

nice work so far, the new graphics look nice.

I think a background woule be a good idea. to help seperate the snake from the ground, try adding a simple shadow (offset slightly).

there a lots of snake entries, It'll be fun to compare them all after the deadline

and make my snake all grubby? not likely.. lol
although a browinsh background would probably work reasonably well,
but I didn't want to detract too much from the retro look.
I know my compo entry may not be precisely what the judges are looking for,
but at least it will have enough uniqueness to distinguish it from the original game.

Mr Pet Rat, didn't I reply? oops. I'll go and take care of that shortly.
Still love the music btw, I think it fits in great!

Jopie,
got caught up working on a few other things.
See my other post called Kollapse for the puzzle game I'm tinkering with.
I also wrote something in another basic (gasp) to do number puzzles for my mother.
It's like the word criss cross games, except it uses numbers instead of words.

The more I look at the new snake I used the less I like it.
I think I might just go back to the circle body coz it feels way more feeble and retro
which is precisely what I was aiming for. The new snake body is nice, but I just reckon it's all a little too small and I don't feel like changing the screen resolution.

Keep at me, I will work on Serpentile, but maybe not till next week.
