For those who have this months PC Format (the one with the Doom 3 review), could you have a look in the letters page and see if there was a letter (e-mail to be precise) from yours truely (with regards to the state of PC games).

I cant look myself as the magazine is sealed (and I dont want to buy it unless my letters in there)...

And speaking of letters - did anyone see my one in last months Retro Gamer ??

Which issue of Retrogamer? - the one with 'Steel sky?

Did'nt notice it, but I'll be sure to take a look.

I don't really read PC Format, PC games magazines tend to get on my nerves with their OTT hype of practically every game worth a mention. Anyone remember when computer magazines were entertaining?. PC Format probably does'nt even care how Jeff Minter is!.

Thats nice of you...

Quote: "Which issue of Retrogamer? - the one with 'Steel sky?"

No, the previous one - got a scan of the letter on my web site.

I will only get a PC magazine if there is something I want on the CD (which isn't often). Most of the time, I just read it in WHSmiths...

TCA - no offence but your site is a pain to try and find anyting! With all those oddly named sections that exude "corporate rubbsih" it's hard to actually find that you want

Maybe you could just rename the buttons on the side bar to something more explanatory.

Maybe sections such as Home, About, Contact me, My Plugins, Downloads etc.

LOL! - it won't matter David, it's illegible - need to up the DPI on your scanner mate!

That looks familiar though, I remember to letter regarding International Soccer (a forgotten classic) in this months Retro, the one with Steel Sky!. Unless I'm loosing it, I'll have a look tonight, but it'll help when you tell us your real name so we know which is yours!.

Yes, I'll have to rescan that... Didn't check to see whether it was readable or not...

I remember being totally stoked at the fact that I sent in a tip to PC Format's technical pages (It was printed in like, november 1999 or something).

It said something like:

Make sure that your BIOS' virus/MBR protection is turned off when using things like Partition Magic.

I had a couple of days trouble with my PC freezing when Partition Magic tried to work its magic.

I had a letter printed in Australia's PC Powerplay last year, I was basically explaining why computers aren't made to last as long as analog watches.

I'm a bit of a magazine junkie... I subscribe to all of the following:

Edge
GAMES (tm)
Retro Gamer *
PC Plus
PC Zone
PC Gamer
Game Developer *
MCV *
Custom PC
Web User
International PHP Magazine *
PHP Architect

(* = actually, I get sent those free each month)

And I also collect old computing magazines, anything from the 80's to around the mid-90's. Needless to say I have complete collections of just about every Atari ST magazine ever printed in the UK, plus an almost complete collection of Computer + Video Games, ACE, New Computer Express, Zero, The One and loads more Several thousand issues worth infact.

For some strange reason this week I was looking into seeing how much it would cost to rent some storage place in a local secure storage facility

Cheers,

Rich

Hey, Rich by any chance do you have any old Atari mags that talk about the Atari PILOT language in depth? I've been looking for some good documentation on it for a compiler/interpreter I'm writing but haven't found anything really explaining it yet (and don't feel like buying a old manual I'd only flip through once).

Well I get Game Developer free at least ... I have no idea why. I never subscribed for it or allowed anyone to send me free copies. But I've been getting it since last March, addressed to me too. It's scary actually

That's quite old, probably only found in stuff like Antic - but all issues of Antic are on-line, so all is not lost

Same here! But I know why I get it--- I answered an online survey.

Like Rich, I also collect tons of magazines, but I have nowhere the size of his collection. I used to subscribe to Next Generation mag so I have every issue of it. I also have every issue of Electronic Entertainment (renamed to PC Entertainment then went belly up). I've also subscribed to Wired for years upon years.

Mad and Cracked magazines are also in my collection--- some of them going back to the 70's!

I *WISH* I could afford a Retro Gamer subscription, my favourite magazine, but its subscription rate is an unholy $190!!! I have to shell out $12.99 for each issue, and I've only seen issue 2 and 5 in newstands

I just wish we had the same quality and niche selection of mags here in NA than they do in the UK. When I went there in 2002 I went straight to the nearest book store and bought about 5 mags to read on the flight back home. Their magazines are usually longer and wider in size and the quality of the articles seem richer.

Aside from getting Retro Gamer (whether I'll get any more is unknown), I used to get Computing (for some reason - as I never requested it). The only good thing about that was the backpage with strange and funny IT things, and Dilbert.

Back in 1990 I had a letter published by Amiga Format. It was a letter complaining about the increasingly poor quality of game endings. If you play an entire game through from start to finish what you expect is a good and satisfying ending - not a black screen with "the end" or its equivalent written upon it.

Also, in 1989 I received two whole pages of coverage in the centrefold of New Computer Express. This was a weekly magazine published about the whole of the 16 bits then in use. The reason I got two whole pages about moi is because I entered 2 entries in one of their competitions - one for me and one for a friend. I entered his entry because he looked up the answer in his Encyclopedia Britannica. NCE bizarrely thought this was hilarious and sent me a game called "Astate" for my Amiga as a joke reward. They said Astate was the worst game ever made. I tried it for about 20 minutes (long endurance record) and I have to say they weren't far wrong.

Other than that, I am a regular contribution to the "Good hibernation" column of "Grisly and Polar Bear Weekly". Its a very fine publication but I have some reservations about the propriety of the scantily clad female bears on the front. I think this is an obvious and tasteless sales pitch to my less discerning colleagues in the bear kingdom fraternity. The editor remains unswayed by my protestations. Or, at least, he would be if he bothered to wake up for summer this year.

Look in one of the first NCEs after the "centrefold" was introduced. It was a few years into the publication of the thing.

It lasted from 12th November 1988 to 28th December 1991 (164 issues) so that isn't too bad really!

I don't think I've got time to check them all though Not unless you can be more specific on the date range?

Nah... all I can remember is that it was between half way in and towards the end of NCE's life.

I've just done a speculative google but I can't find any reference to the article in question. Theres quite a funny site where the author vents bile about the fact he was only paid 6p per word when he worked for the mag though .

Would be interesting to see. Did you manage to read the re-scan of mine (had to do it large otherwise it would become unreadable, as did re-scaling).

I had already read your letter, just did'nt think it was yours - quite weird to think that there are people here old enough to remember the same games as an old fart like me - especially something like International Soccer.

I used to visit my uncles every weekend and we'd play tournaments of I.S., Miner-49'er, Hunchback, Decathlon and Summer Games. I.S. (we renamed it 'The Fitba') is a damn good game, I reckon a cartridge version must be extremely rare, because even back then, I could'nt even find a copy for my own C64 - much to our dissapointment, and my uncle would never lend it to me.

I would expect IS to be very rare now - I used to play it a lot with my Dad, until Emilyn Hughe's Soccer came out (many years later). In between we also tried Matchday II, and Microprose Soccer (my Dad didn't like for some reason). If I remember correctly, it came out the same time as the C64 did.

Wish I had kept my C64 things now could have made a mint. Ah well, I needed the money at the time (probably).

Aside from the Archi. (and now the PC), the C64 was the machine I programmed on the most. Never did get the hang of programming on the Amiga (and never bothered with the ST anyway).

I think we ruined many a joystick with the Decathalon game (especially the Quickshot joysticks which had very thin (and poor) shafts. The one that lasted the longest was one with two large red buttons and a red round top - I believe it was the later model of Commodores joystick.

I hope Retrogamer do an article on Imagine games - before being taken over by Ocean they appeared to be a very dodgy company (and due to them most people think programmers earn enough money to buy fast cars). I did a search on on the internet and apparently a BBC crew was filming them just before they went bust.

I liked Imagine, Target Renegade on the Spectrum was awesome - better than Double Dragon anyway .

My uncle used to make his own joysticks out of electronics project cases, and bits of scrap - the firebutton tended to be a microswitch with the lever bent over!, damn sturdy though - they lasted for years. I still have 'The Arcade', which IMO is the best joystick from that era, gonna recycle it and use it in a MAME cabinet (it has a ridge at the bottom, so all I'd have to is cut a hole for that and it'd sit happily without me needing to destroy it), it still works after 20 years constant punishment!.

I think Retrogamer should have a feature on remakes every month, like a 2 page review of remakes with download links etc - when I finish Jetpac I'll most likely ask them to feature it on their CD, god knows if they'll be up for that - I'd love to have a game feature on a coverdisk.

The only game I had from Imagine (before the Ocean take-over/buy out) was Arcadia 64 - very hard after level 15 or so...

There were several games I brought after Imagine joined Ocean - one was a 2D/3D plane shoot-em-up (slightly like Afterburner). Cant remember the name though.
