edit: SEE PAGE TWO FOR FIRST UPDATE

This is a download of a test version of 'I World'. If you don't knwo what it is, go here for info and screens;

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=36857&b=8

This test version is fully functional and includes all the media and some premade maps.
This is mainly a demo for you to report back to me on and make any suggestions or point out any bugs you encounter. So please, post any comments so that I can improve the program.

Download here; (about 15mb, sorry!)
http://www.dbspot.com/hmm/iworldtest.zip

ps. It runs smoothly on my system, but please tell me if its slow on yours as I may have to make a less detailed version to make it useable for you.

very,very cool. I like the targeting system. I wish there was a run button. I liked how the cops chased you if you shot them. I wish there was mouse look/aim and have the left and right buttons for strafe. Nice AI. When you hijack a car, you could show the person you kick out of the car.

overall, really awesome!

Nice, loads of good suggestions, this is what I need.

Run button - good idea, I'll add a stamina bar which will work like the ammo bar.
Mouse look/aim - i did consider this for aiming with the rocket launcher, but decided against it due to its deviation from other controls. Now you mention it though, I may change that.
Showing victims of car theft - maybe possible.

BTW - I forgot to mention that F1 shows a controls panel. So if you need to find out how to use an editing operation or how to play the game, its all explained in the when you hold F1 in different modes.

Very impressive game!!!

Is there any way to restart playing (when you have died) without going back to the level editor and selecting run again, as that got a bit annoying on my slow computer.

Pretty good. Bit jerky on my machine but still playable.

Crashes a hell of a lot when swapping from edit mode to run mode. Can't even run the canyon level.

Having the weather turned on in edit mode is rather annoying.

Same as robo cat, does not appear to be way to restart game when you die - you just keep on spurting blood!

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, a restart button will definately be added. I had planned it, just forgot it

I'm currently working on that crash. Its happened to me a few times. If anyone knows what that .txt file generated means, please let me know.

I did some testing of this game, and it performed great. The movement and animations in the game were smooth on my 3ghz machine, but on a 1.7ghz machine I tested with it got a little choppy.

Those cops are insane! If there really was cops like that in real life I think we would all be dead by now.

You did an awesome job on this game. In the future I see this being commerical quality, but it'll probably be hard to market since RockStar would end up putting you in court for similarities to their GTA titles.

Any chance of using memblocks to speed things up for the guys that have older computers?

if you go off road and the cops see you they chase you
able to target and shoot cars

Very impressive, I loved it (although I do have some thoughts on a few things I think you should modify). I loved all of the little touches, like when you splashed into the water, the water ACTUALLY splashed, and how the car went to the bottom but float to the surface and kinda bobbled there. Very nice, it's those smaller touches that make a game very complete.

As far as additions/improvements go:

- It would make it much more enjoyable if the speed at which vehicle accelerate and de-accelerate be greatly increased. It seems like it takes forever to break and forever to get going.
- While I feel the control system for "person" mode is adequate and works fine, I honestly feel that a more GTA3-ish control scheme would make this game more accesible to more people, with a simple behind camera that swivels as the model swivels, I think it would make it much more enjoyable, you could still use you original targeting system, except maybe tie the targeting the right mouse button instead of control and firing to the left mouse button. I think that would be extremely good.
- While I didn't run into the bug while switching between editor and game mode, it would be great to have a restart button, or just an automatic restart that does so after however many seconds. I have no improvements for the editor at all, I think it's very well done and simple to use.
- Also as another final touch, maybe think about adding loading bars to the map loading and the game loading, as even on my P4 computer it took quite awhile to load, and people may want to know what's going. It just makes it look more pro.
- [edit] Whoops, just thought of some more things, the pistol should fire faster, you should be able to target cars as well, and when the police (or other vehicles for that matter) hit you, it should knock you down, play some visible animation. I'm only saying all these things because I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH! [/end rant]

Other than that, I think it's an awesome little game and I envy your physics programming skills greatly. I'm taking college physics this year as I'm a senior and maybe that will give me some insight on all of it.

Another segestion(should be easy):
Make an option to take all the cops out of the game.
They're usially annoying.
And when they go after you, the game lags a lot.

Thanks for all the constructive criticism. I'm looking to release a second test version after the weekend.

I've already implemented a 'stamina' system with running, and will add a restart button, a 'no police' option, will speed up pistol fire,loading bars and maybe people in cars. There are some others i'll remember in a minute, but all of these are scheduled.

...oh, and faster acceleration.

@ Granada: Im sorry it runs slow. I'm not big on computer hardware and specs so I'm unable to really interpret a problem with your setup (though the specs seem better than mine). If anyone else, more computer literate than I, has anything to suggest please do.

Im happy to implement 'settings' menu. It shouldn't pose too much probs. I dont have probs with the collision (appart from some of the car getting lost in the building). Im afraid that the program as a whole is a big mess of functions calling up one another, so changing something as major as collision would be near impossible. Though i'll do my best to improve what i've got.

I also doubt my ability to make such a complicated replay mode.

@ David T: Yeah, i'll take a look though my code and try to solve that problem. If anyone knows what;

[COMMON]
PathToEXE=C:\Temp\iworld\i world - test\CrashOn_09_10_04.txt

It means there's something wrong with line 1453.
The game has about a 1/25 chance of crashing when running the map.
I got crashes on lines: 1446,1387, and 1441 when running the map.
(Actually, it crashed a lot more but overwrote the CrashOn files.)

My problems with collision are: sometimes you get stuck on/fall into a building and when you walk on a certain building, you get stuck(if you're not in a car), and hop in the air(if you're in a car).

Oh yeah, one more suggestion that shouldn't be too difficult... the cars should start on fire when upside, or some timer should start that will flip it back over. Just a thought.

The cars do set on fire when upside down.

@ Ilya: I've now sorted out the collision. Thankfully, it wasnt a big error in the collision code, but in the player controls that was causing the 'getting stuck' probs.
I'm definately planning a tutorial on modding the program aswell, but as this is a test version, ive left it out.

I'll release a new demo soon. Just added lighting (sorted some issues Ive had with DBP and 3DCanvas models), sorted collision and added a stamina system for you to test. Also adapted Police ai code so that there is now slowdown when police chase you. Also added the all important 'reset' button.

hey hmm, must say its improved alot from the very first dbc version i tried!

couple of things that really irritated me tho was the controls for shooting/aiming and moving... they made it really hard to see what was going on and far too restrictive

the car physics seem to be alot better in this version than the last, im impressed with the rolling cars, very fun. I did think however that the cars slid too much... made the ground feel a bit icy

i love the editor, the way you can draw roads like that is very neat, and i also like the auto tile belnd you have in there too

after i died i found no way to restart and continue to play, i had to open the file again, and then go bk into the play mode

the pistol gun seemed a little slow shooting but it was bearable, the peds seemed to take forever to kill... 5 or 6 shots.. a few too many imo

also i was wondering if you would post the file format for your saved worlds, that way people can use your lovely editor to make levels for their games, doesn't even have to be city levels, you could add rpg style models into it and use it for a village editor

anyways, i really really like this, has alot of potential! (hope i havn't sounded too negative, just trying to suggest a few improvements!)

look forward to seeing then next demo

Sorry for the belated post... Life has been intreasting lately...

My comp specs are:
2800+ 2.08 GHz Athlon XP
512 megs memory
NVIDA GeForce4 MX

It's not as much as - - - - -, it runs like ________, i.e. it's very smooth, but it runs way too slow on my system... Kinda like a bullet time effect... only it's stuck Maybe it's just my comp, various games have been known to run *very* slow on the athlon but run as smooth as you could ask for on my Pentium 3 (256 megs mem, no graphics accelerator though ) If I get the chance, I'll try it on the other comp. Maybe this weekend... Late saturday, or maybe sunday afternoon...

But nonetheless, this is a great game! Like Strutt Your Stuff good, or StarWraith2 good The shooting needs some work, maybe more damage per shot, multiple guns, etc. etc. But overall, it's lookin good! Keep it up!

Right, heres the new version.

Download it full (14.6 mb with all the media n stuff);
http://www.dbspot.com/hmm/iworldtest.zip

or download just the updated .exe file (3mb) and extract to your existing 'iworld' folder;
http://www.dbspot.com/hmm/iworldexe.zip

Updates;
- No lagging when police chase you.
- Lighting (day night cycle)
- more realistic collisions with spinning.
- faster guns
- RESET button (Tab) for resetting whilst running the map
- Sprint button ( or z).
- Settings - no police, unlimited ammo, invincible, unlimited stamina, infintie mass (in 'map' menu).

I did do a little playing with the whole physics of motion thing, and found a way to make it more realistic and less slippery, but I didn't like it that much. It just didn't feel right.

Anyway, please post any new suggestions, comments etc. And enjoy!

These new screens show the lighting. They look pretty much the same as the old ones (http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=36857&b=8), but if you cross reference with the old ones you can see a huge improvement to the atmosphere.
