I know there are at least 6 people in eastern australia, so it could be something good. We certaainly have the talent to hold something interesting, with people like indi doing something artistic, and Kevin with all his coding knowledge.

I dunno, it would be fun.

and summer holidays are like 10 weeks away.

whatadoya recon?

I know Indi floated the idea a while back, i guess there was a lack of numbers or something? dunno. I think he was thining about Sydney or something (that'd be nice since i've never been there ).. and return Flights are pretty cheap from melbourne.. could be a fun way to wrap up the year.

in that case, melbourne may well be a better option then. There's prolly a fair few Db'ers in VIC/TAS combined. Then kidnap Indi

I wish I had the cash right now to go to australia for a convention because:

a)I would get to be at a convention
b)I would get to see Australia
c)I would get to meet the Aussie programmers here, especially Exeat
d)Exeat could give me a few cracks across the mouth that he owes me.

Why not come to the UK one. You'll :

A) Meet me (you lucky things)
B) Meet the bear-lovin' Philip...
C) Meet IanM
D) Be at a convention
E) Listen to many, many, fine people talk.

Come to the UK Convention on the 23rd & 24th of October

Hang on, am I to understand that meeting me is a highlight of the UK Convention?

Why did nobody tell me this before?

Also, can I just point out that I do not love bears. Being a bear and loving bears are two quite different things. The former is lawful whereas the latter gets you 20 years in HMP Strangeways.

The problem in getting to the UK is it takes 24 hours air travel time from oztralia.
Most likely cramping my girth in an economy size seat for the duration.
This would only lead to bloodshed at the other end of the journey. Mine, the crews or the passengers. It doesn't matter to me, as it's all red anyway.

An aussie convention also means we donut have to learn a new language to communicate with other attendees. ie. amerikan or englush..

Wow, an Australian convention seems nice
I live in Melb too, so if it actually happens, I have a 99% chance of being there. How long do these things usually go for? (as it would be a first for me)

In 6 years a lot of people will change their minds. So better cut that dead-line by at least... a half or so.

they usually last as long as the money holds out down at the pub.

now I have a friend who owns a bar in melbourne,so the chances are good that we can prolong the experience..

I still know the people at the warehouse so if sydney is on the cards theres a cable modem but only a few pcs left in that place.

I live in Eastern Melbourne so I think it'd be best to take a count of how many people are willing to come and where they are currently living then hopefully we can find somewhere that's easy for most people.

Then you need someone willing to set it up and organise everything!

Well I'm in regardless of where in melbourne it's held. I'd most likely do sydney as well, or even tassie for that matter.

public transport is abundant here in melbourne, if not always on time so it should be
easy for everyone to get around.
If there are any juniors in attendance, then it's just a matter of finding somewhere initially where the whole crew can get together, then later, somewhere for the die hards to go.

Agreed, I could reach basically anyway in Melbourne, however, interstate may be another matter if you guys choose somewhere like Sydney. It all depends on when and where it is for me so I may or may not be able to make it. lol.

I'm just north of Sydney, on the Coast.

Would be nice to have an Aussie convention, but seen as I am a mere 17 ( till May next year ) then the whole "go out to the pub and pass out wasted" part will be outta the question for me unfortunatly.

It would be nice to see how many Australians actually turn up, if any at all!

If we had an in-house comp, or challenge, and Kevin turned up, then there's no point in anyone else going, 'cos it's obvious who'd win!

Jess.

Well, why not plan a year in advance.

Let's make it happen, it's about time too!

What dates will people prospectively be available to attend an Aussie Convention?
Also, state your prefered location, and date of 18th birthday

I'm available anytime that is good for everyone, and since I will be hopefully moving to Bathurst next year, It's no different if it's held in Melbourne or Sydney, although, Melbourne sounds nicer

I'm 18 on May 2nd 2005.

Jess.

Aussie convention sounds great!

Prefered dates: Can't really see a year into the future yet, but any date should be fine.
Prefered location: Sydney.
18th Birthday: December, 2007. ROFL.

I'm looking at a few Programming courses at the University there, for a few years down the track.

I think my parents have got enough frequent flyer miles for me to go there for free . All i would need then is a laptop and some kind of accomodation (a decent size cardboard box would be fine, and i could "hire" a laptop)

Seen as I can't get Fibble to shut up...
I can bring my PC, XP, FX5700, AMD 2600+, 17" mon, 1024MB SD-DDR RAM.
And possibly the family laptop, ME, inbuilt everythign else, slow as a snail, can't run DBP

Can others list if the can bring thier PC's or not, and what specs they are?

Also, if indi can still get a hold of that Warehouse, as he said, there's some PC's there, and a more-than-adequate net connection.

Nobody can shut me up! NOBODY!

And when I said "hire" a laptop, I meant "borrow" a laptop from someone. I don't want to bring my computer, cos that wouldn't really be fesable with a plane.

Seriously, we need to have some kind of min LAN whilst there. Its compulsory. And little competitions with prizes like beer, with a possiblity of more beer

A good idea would be to have a tech demo creation on one day, and possible a 2D limited game creation on the other, or possibly just play LAN games

Although, my last ( and thankfully only ) eperience with LAN games was that teens tend to get too vocal when playing LAN games, and thus start yelling loudly, and I felt like punching him in the face!...

*Ahem*

I'm Calm...
...Yes, Calm...

TBH, I'm just mirroring my idea's off of what I saw from TCA's organisation of the English one

Possibly have pre-created media for the 2D one, and a certain Genre, and for the Tech Demo, maybe have them all made before hand, and then shown off, and code explained etc

Also, 'twould be nice if some of the Aussies that are graphically talented could get in on the action... maybe create the media for a 2D creation, or... I dunno

I'd like to come to this convention, but sadly, no beer for me, i'm only 12.

I'm O.K at Sprites n such, made a few metal slug like sprites a while ago.

I think this convention would be a great idea, but we need to think of location. so far i think everyone wnts it in sydney, But WHERE in Sydney. when we have nailed it down to a suburb in sydney, we need to find a spot some where in that suburb. Somewhere like a R.S.L, a PCYC (Police Cadets Youth Club), and maybe even a neighbourhood centre.

Another thing we need to consider is $$$ money. We would need this to book the place were we r gonna have it. i think the best way to overcome this dilemma is to have an entry fee, about $5 - $10 dollars.

Flibble- you were talking bout some warehouse of somesort (or was that indi?) this would be a good place to have it.

On the subject of bringing your computer i cant do it, my comps a real crap one and it isn't even a notebook/Laptop.

if we have surplus money maybe we could hire some laptops.

Anyways, thats it for me, my favoured location would be Penrith, Because its pretty close to me, has a PCYC and stuff like that.

Nah, twas indi, not me.

I really don't mind what the venue is, as long as i can get there some how and there is some form of accomodation

Personally, I would prefer to have it at Coral Bay, in the Nigaloo reef, but thats just me

Axel,

You can still come, we don't have to go to the pub.
Personally, I don't like drinking, unless it's heavily, to get absolutely sloshed, and pass out

Sydney was suggested as indi can get us a nice little place to have it at, with a really fast internet connection, and network, so that will make everything easier

You're right about the suburb, money, accomodation, etc, but for now, let's just get numbers shall we? Cos without people, there can't even be one

If its numbers you need/want and a bit of excitement then why not open it up to other programing languages as well so you could have a little expo going there with a small charge to get in etc. You could have arranged talks on games and previews etc.

yea, i think jess is right, maybe if we have an annual convention we could vary the Languages.
