Ah, at last. Def Leppard have always been my favourite band. Tops.... although Nirvana came bloody close... oh, and Mettalica... and Guns 'N Roses... bloody hell...

Wow, such top bands. Most of which are in my collection. Loved that stuff.

Oh, and I cannot believe no-one said Megadeth!!!! C'mon!!!

Oh, and my favourite "college" type band was The Sisters of Mercy. Ok, some of it is a bit too goth for the above, but Vision Thing was an album well above what most ever came. Fantastic. If you can find it... never found a CD in a big chain record store since about 1995.

Just looking through list again... someone else admits liking Whitesnake!!!!! Yes. I have tonnes of Whitesnake vinyl back at my parents. Good old music fairs. Heh, bought lots of that and Kiss. Top bands.

I saw them on a festival once, or actually I didn't see them but an enormous amount of stage fog instead... and once in a while one or two of the background singers. But it was a fantastic atmosphere somehow.

But Derek and the Dominoes was Eric Clapton seeing whether he'd have a solo career outside of Cream. So its Eric again.

I'm a big Eric Clapton fan. As people will by now have gathered. Been buying his stuff and watching him in concert for the past 20 years.

Philip, You'll notice I said Blues breakers too. Have you forgotten that Clapton/God was part of them early on too and would would never have forfilled his potential if it weren't for John Mayall ? That said, Clapton's Early stuff is the best, especially Cream and BB. Besides, I think Jack Bruce was VASTLY under-rated in Cream.

(You probably know a lot more about this than me though and will give me a stiff talking to when you read this post )

Hmmmm, maybee I should mention Yardbirds, too...

Actually, the Sisters are one of the best goth bands for a metal fan to listen to (I'm a huge fan of both genres). Them, Rosetta Stone, and Fields of the Nephilim are probably the only goth bands a metal fan would like.

Napalm Death are classic. Very few musicians can say they invented a genre but Napalm Death can. However, unless you like loud, fast, brutal music you won't like them at all. The only other Grindcore act that can even attempt to reach the influence they had would be Carcass.

In my eyes one of the greatest metal bands (well, more metal than not) of the '80s was Ministry. "The Land of Rape and Honey" is required listening for industrial metal fans. So if you like Static-X and Fear Factory you NEED to get some Ministry. In the more "mainstream" catagory that I haven't seen anyone give credit too is Anthrax who are one of the best early Thrash bands ever IMHO.

Dave disbanded Megadeth because of a problem with his hand which caused him to not be able to play, but it seems his hand has healed because they are releasing a new album september 14th...

Sigh, just dusted off some Twisted Sister and an old Hawkwind CD my sister got me years ago. Top stuff.

Hmmmm. That reminds me, must watch Spinal Tap again. Anyone got the album? Is absolutely class (totally black) and has some of the jokes from the film. Such as the dobly logo, which took me ages before I noticed it. Music is tops too. Some of the songs are right up there. And listen to Sex farm to count all the dodgy references. "Spraying down her barn door" arf.....

I've just been critiqued about Eric Clapton. I think I'm going to commit suicide!

I personally have to say that I think Jack Bruce was rubbish. But thats a personal opinion so feel free to ignore.

I'm still perplexed by how Clapton was "bad ass" in the 80s. His 80s stuff was mostly the Money & Cigarettes, Behind The Sun, Edge of Darkness and August albums.

Of those, BtS is mid stream rock, Edge was for a pretty good BBC TV series and August is mid 80s syntho-music.

I think you're thinking of the 70s mate.
