I hate SP2. Before I installed it, my pc took about 1 min 40 to boot up, reasonable, but now I installed SP2, it takes 5 minutes! F'in Micro$oft...

As I found out when I was installing on someones computer yesterday, AOL 9.0 (dont ask) needs to be installed after SP2...

Had to re-install XP twice 'cos of that problem (the SP2 installation didn't complete, messed up XP and need reinstalling)...

Aside from that, if you've got a normal system (like all my computers), boot time should be more or less the same as original, after the first reset.

Its the only time I've had problems with SP2 (and its been installed on 5 computers) - but this time it cant really be blamed on Microsoft...

If it takes ages, look in the service logs for anything dodgy.

Yeah, it also screwed up the sound drivers. I re-installed them, but certain things (including sound in DBP) doesn't work. I guess I will have to reinstall now.

I've been using sp2 for about 2 weeks now i noticed the same thing as hamish said loading time wen't for me from about 45 sec's up to about 2 and a half, if your loading alot of programs at start up like messengers, quicktime and such try taking anything out of start up that your not using frequently or don't really need at boot up this should bring your loading time back down some it brought me back down to about a min.

I have SP2 on my Dev machine, and I haven't noticed an increased load time.

But, having said that, I try to keep that system as clean as possible, by unstalling unnecessary things ( games, apps etc ) and just generally looking after everything

I have noticed that it seems to be smoother using Explorer too ( just subtle differences, like faster loading of thumbnails etc ).

The only gripe I have is that damned Security centre, I can't get rid of it. And as that PC isn't on the net, the annoying pop-up bubble comes up each boot, and Grrr...

TCA, I know, But it would be nice if there was an option hidden away in Control Panel or somewhere that allowed you to turn it off so it didn't bug users who aren't connected to the net ( or have their own protection online ).

I installed SP2 on my WinXP Pro machine, flawless execution. I guess I made my save throw versus Microsoft Upgrade.

You can turn off the notification thing in the security centre by opening it up, then on the left side (in the box) it says: "Change the way security Centre alerts me". Click on it, then deselect all the boxes you don't want to be notified about.

In case people didn't notice SP2 creates a restore point b4 it installs so you can just revert back to that with no problems. That’s what I did.

For those with dial ups:

DO not download sp2 - it is HUGE
Instead find the orderform and order a FREE copy of a CD of SP2 - it will arrive in under 28 days (mine arrided in 14)

My computer melts regulary - perhaps it likes being fondue

Yes. It detects you haven't backed up, and erases all of your files.

j/k

No its just an update - although it's a one-way installation.

And to get it either donwload, autoupdate or get it off a magazine.

I downloaded SP2 hoping to get rid of my adware problems and it effectively did nothing. The same two little wares are in there still. At least it's not letting anything else in....but come to think of it SpyBot was effectively doing the same thing. Every once in a while IE will block popups so I'm still just using Firefox.

If you install SP2, forget the use of Remote Assistance.. (not that many of you would use it anyway)

So would most people say that SP2 is a good or bad thing? I want to know before I update.

It's good, I just wish it had done more. I'm probably not just noticing it, but hey...yeah. BTW, the wares that are in there are practically impossible to get rid of.

1min 40sec -> 5mins?!
That's very strange. Currently at home I have 2 systems running on XP Service Pack 2, and everything appears to actually run faster for me.

God knows how poorly setup you system is to take almost 2minutes to boot up.
I've actually sat down and timed my boot-up times,

Boot from cold, it'll takes approx. 15seconds to get to windows log-in screen (512mb takes a while for the ram check which i can't skip on this system)
When I click the login it'll open Windows itself and will be ready to use within 3-4seconds.

It won't stop loading software for about a minute, but unless the system has just crashed (normally Sound Card/AGP Bridge IRQ error) i can use my system without worrying what's loading in the background.

It isn't a state of the art system either:
Celeron 1GHz 200MHz FSB / PC133 8ns 512MB SdRam / Geforce FX 5200 64MB AGP / Creative SB16 IDE ISA / Realtek 8029 NIC / SiS 900 NIC / USB 2.0 Teracyon 4 Ports / Seagate 20GB DMA33 (Pri Master) Hitachi 160GB DMA133 (Pri Slave) Philips CDR1600+ (Sec Slave) (all are on C40 PIO4 Cables)

So, it is hardly the most amazingly fast system for XP to be running on... yet still gets some more than reasonable running times.
About all I've done with this system which isn't done as default, is to disable the Messenger Service.

Those popups drive me bloody mad, but that's all the optimisation i've done.

It sounds like something is failing during booting - aside from degragging, have a check of the system logs.

SP2 installation causes big bad disk fragmentation.

Everyone should do a defrag after installing.

Asides from that the only problem is that I have to click unblock every now and again.

It's a good un - with plenty of good fixes.

Personally, Im not going to SP2 until all of its bugs are fixed - a bug patch for windows that causes more bugs - that the description for sp2. Its because Microsoft didn't have time to throughly test it, because its patching up some serious issues - but I'd rather have a fast working PC than a slow non-functioning one, Bill.

Note: Sp2 causes very bad compatibility issues with sound drivers, system services and some programs. This could be why your system is taking so long!

Lighting, just curious, where did you get your information from?

It looks like you've just read alot of reviews of people who seem to hate M$.

All the people here ( including myself ) haven't noticed anythign wrong with programs, sound cards or any abnormal bugs, and in a couple of cases, SP2 seems to have XP running a bit faster and smoother than SP1.

jess.

What The Fudge?!
Service Pack 2, spent 1year in Beta, it is primarily made up from fixxes which have been released steadily since 2002, it has had 20 beta builds, and 2 seperate release candidates.

There is no other software i've seen which has been so thuroughly tested, many were wondering if it was ever going to ACTUALLY be released.

Not only this but Microsoft the past 8months pulled a total of 70 programmers from Project Longhorn in order to make sure Service Pack 2 was working correctly.

Stop reading the Anti-Microsoft Propogander and download the SP2 to see for yourself what it does.
SP1 made Windows XP Stable
SP2 makes Windows XP Secure

Incomptible driver complaints are comming from people who are still using CD Drivers, which XP prefers to use the WHQL v2 Drivers of which any driver release 2002 or later will be Certificated for if they are Certificated.

And the problem doesn't lie with Windows XP, but DirectX 9.0c which is installed with the Service Pack.

Well, I think a reinstall is needed. It seems that whenever the computer is restarted, the sound drivers bugger up, so I have to re-install them every boot if I want to use anything with sound. Great .

Raven - Any tips for increasing boot time once the whole thing is re-installed?
