where abouts would be the best place to start eg. easy to understand tutorials and a decent free compiler(and probly ide).

been looking at starting c++ before i got dbp, but i thought i would try learning an easier languege before atempting c++.

I found this site to really useful. The tutorials basically cut through the bulk BS and simply lay it out for you.

My favorite compiler is GNU. You can get a compiled version of it from:
www.delorie.com/djgpp

Another good one is available from Borland.com. Look for the v5.5 command line compiler.

If you want a smoother introduction you might want to check out Torque. It uses similar syntax for TorqueScript, and then once you license it you can use C++ since you get the source with the license.

i got visual c++ compiler and i am now working hard so i can help them community with plug-ins(might have to wait 5 years tho ).
