Hey,

Does anyone else have computer speed problems? Recently my computer has slowed down probably 75%, and I have no clue why. I cleaned out all the old files and cleared up about 15gb of space. I didn't see any 'speed' changes, still friggen slow.

So .. after that I scanned for viruses. I used Kaspersky (the best anti-virus i've used) and ad-aware SE 1.05. No changes in speed.

What do I do now, defragment? Format?

Please help, thanks.

Defragment.

And if it annoys you too much, format.

Push ctrl-alt-delete. Then processes. Which one is taking up the most cpu and ram?

Clean the registry from obsolete or invalid inputs,RegSeek. Get rid of useless startup programs.

Spybot can do that too as well as manage your startup programs.
I'd also recommend making your swap space larger. I remember my friends computer suddenly started running slowly and his swap space was changed to a lower amount. Another thing would be to check what programs are trying to access the internet; if you have a bunch of programs that are then it could cause slowdowns (many automatic update programs so this).

Get Spybot, and Adaware! Press Cntrl/Alt/Del and look what is running as well. Shut down, and find suspicious files, and delete them. Windows XP is a bit different.

yeh- could be a virus- also check your hardware to see if anythings faulty, like one of your ram sticks has fallen out so your using less ram than your used to, or your CPU's not overheating, or if the drivers for somethings gotten corrupted.

yeh, it can, but why stop there and not get a new pc? he only wants his pc to be as good as it was before it started slowing down.

Of course if things are really bad there is nothing stopping you from reformating. There is nothing faster than a nice clean install of Windows (and no linux references please )

yes i reformat about every 90 days cause i get so much junk spy ware and slowness and i got a new hdd that was an upgrade from
2mb cache and 7200rpm to 6mb cache and 10000 rpm and now it is running way faster of course i also had to reformat so that also even though i also got a motherboard downgrade though from pc 2100/2700 and 2.7 ghz cpu to pc133/100 and 1.3ghz
even though i like the smaller cpu cause it stays cooler better my faster one would over heat from being on over 5 hours and htis one can stay cool after being on over 2 weeks and the same thing with the ram i also got a strip of 128mb ram from the deal since my brother could no longer use it

(soory for off topic)
btu yes you might want to try reformating or getting a bit more ram(128mb is good 256mb upgrtade is better)

About every 6-12 months is the timeframe of my reformat cycle, at around that time some of my programs begin to break anyway due to corrupt files etc. It also forces me to backup my entire computer which is an incredibly important task.

I backup every week or so, and reformat (with a new hard drive or two every few years).

A few seggestions:

First off, get PestPatrol. That is simply the best program for getting rid of spyware. I have it, Adaware, and Spybot.

Secondly, check these pages for processes:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

Third, check this page for things that shouldn't be running and all that:

Hope I helped...[href]
