has there ever been a RTS where you are in the regular enviroment (you know mining stuffand all that) but whenever you want you could click on anyone of your troops and it would pan down into First Person view and you can fight the battles yourself and if there was i want it

anyone can be a hero, but a soldier can be a hero five minuets longer....

There's a game that you can do something similar. Its called Savage, and basically you can choose to be either the controller or be a unit. The controller does all the standard building and ordering stuff, and a unit can just walk around, you don't have to do what the controller tells you to, but you get rewards if you do.

Only problem with it is that often you are let down by your own players not playing properly and going off on hero style missions.

Go to http://www.s2games.com/savage/ for details

I was considering that for OIE, the way I made the engine would have allowed me to take control of a soldier in FPS mode - as long as you don't slouch on your collision detection it's a fairly doable idea. Personally I think it'd be great - a strategic RTS that lets you get your hands dirty yourself if you like, probably the most compatible marriage of 2 genres that your likely to see.

Yeah, it would be really cool, if say you were playing a game of Generals, and you took control over your sniper, or lead a battalion of tanks into combat, or flew one of the aircraft. Kind of like Generals crossed with Battlefield

I was working on trying to do this kind of thing, using a OO style method of defining the viewpoints, but I gave up. I'll probably try again when I get bored sometime.

for my mmorpg idea, i was thinking of (to fill space if theres not enough human players) letting people control a range of characters, and having to cycle each one, but then that means AI scripting for when the character is/n't activated

The FPS-RTS concept has been being experimented with in various stages since '97, at least.

Savage does it best, IMO.

Dungeon Keeper 2 is kinda like that,
it's a RTS of sorts, kinda differnt approach to it, but you learn a spell eventually that gives you teh powerz to mind control, and all that does is give it first person perspective, and you control him until you want out

Darwin,
Yeah, DK2 is great like that, you can control the guy's and have them run off into the enemy base to explore, whereas the AI doesn't allow your units to do that ... Heh, thinking about it, Firewall reminds me alot of DK now... the way units can only stay on their own territory, and they just wonder around aimlessly till there's somthing to do

Jess.
