I was planning to enter the Retro Remakes contest with this game, but because the game was still half-arsed incomplete I decided to finish the game first. This means it will still take a while but it will be finished.

WoodMan stage - Tigers are coded now!

HeatMan stage - RoboCopters, they do a lot of damage

HeatMan stage - Those weird fellows are a pain in the neck

Quickman stage - You'll get a painfull death if you don't avoid the lasers

Quickman stage - Oh oh, trapped

Quickman stage - Nearly burned my hands trying to take a screenie

MetalMan stage - Mommy!

FlashMan stage - Flashy!

CrashMan stage - Still needs to be coded

Selection screen - Looks better than the old one

AirMan stage - Redrawn sprites

Introduction - Custom fonts and a nice intro movie

Bubbleman stage - Still the same, except for the sprites

Flashman stage - Still needs some work

I'm uploading a preview video (29MB / length: ~60 seconds, wrong settings? ).
<edit> its done:
http://www.nuclearpublishing.com/hosting/emperorbaal/MegaMan.zip

As you can see, MegaMan still needs a lot of work. But when it's finished it will look 1000x times better than the half-arsed incomplete version I wanted to submit.

note
For the ones that want to know how I coded the custom font. Its really easy (new tutorial coming up ):

hehe nah your game looks really well done, though it did slow down, although that could have just been my media player. But really, looks like a very nice remake of the game, uhh though one suggestion fix up the bars on the top, if i had photoshop i'd make some decent megaman looking ones. but i dont! sorry. i could try and mix you up something if i get the chance to, but that will have to wait till tomorrow.

The slowdown was caused by fraps. Creating a in-game video while running a game and downloading some files at the same time
(I could run in sync rate 0 mode if you want )

Im already updating the graphics

Behold the difference. I just retouched the sprite to 24-bit, by placing some shadow and extra shades in MSPaint.

You used MSPAINT! My Gosh! Your amazing! If I don't have my 24-bit (32-bit if you like alphas) and nice blended brushes, I go absolutely insane! Geeze imagine what you could do if you had a real paint package!

And for the game: Outstanding! I'm excited to see it re-done. Amazingly, out of all the Megamans, you chose the only one I own. Very very excited to see it get finished, and I bet a lot of my friends would love to see it done for some nastalgic with a side of improvement purposes. Excellent work!

Current Projects: Verious things right now. Lots of utils for game making. Hopefully something solid soon.

I have Adobe Photoshop CS and let me tell you, it doesn't produce results like these. And the reason is simple, programs like photoshop are not made for pixel art.

Here is a screenshot taken from the original and a screenshot taken from mine version:

I'm gonna work on the other tiles as well, but updating the graphics takes a lot of time

I've played the original game, and the two are fairly similar. However, you need to make the items that come out of enemies accelerate as they fall, like in the NES games. I also think that the HUD display should be redone, but other than that, it looks pretty good.

Yeah, the video uses a special codec, named - uh.. MainConcept MPEG Video Decoder

or something (mediaplayer says thats the codec)

anyway, the HUD is still a placeholder and I will add better gravity later (the current one was just a "put it in, fast! , before the competition ends!!")

Looks seamless. I played through mega man 2 twice a couple of weeks back and it looks absolutely brilliant. I wait with much anticipation.

Hey,

This is looking great...Megaman II is one of my all time fav's

I could do the music for this project if you like. Would be very cool to do some rock-remakes of all the old MMII songs

Why not? Just cos he has shoulder pads and red hair?
Or do you mean legally... I hear Capcom is a little less stingy about fangames than some companies *glares in an annoyed fashion at Square-Enix* and I assume he aint planning to sell it :p

Got the video to work in a diff player (VLCMediaPlayer) only problem I see is the jumping animation doesn't exist, I assume that's just temp. though? :S
I like how you made the bullets fade away when they get far away, nice touch

Nope, I've got photoshop, but I find it not suitable for pixel art. It's easy to basic re-touch sprites though. (maybe a new tutorial for my site ). Find the part of the sprite you want to re-touch, for example: The foot of the Helicopter thing. Double-click on a color at the bottom and find the color (in this case, brown/red) in the advanced menu. Then you can use the vertical slider to get a nice shade. I usually use the shadow/dark shades first.

If you get a pixelly look when you've scaled the image (I used 200% / 200%) you just add/remove some pixels and its gone:

Step 1: Get/rip the original sprite
Step 2: Scale it if necessary
Step 3: Add pixels to make it look smoother, zoom in to see which pixels I drew.
Step 4: Go back to the normal view and take a look if it's really round/smooth/etc and remove pixels that makes the sprite look weird.
Step 5: Shade it if you want, but before you begin you should pick the source of the light/sun. Top? Corner? Left? Right?

Ah, the bubbleman stage is allmost complete (and not "you can reach the end and defeat bubbleman", but I mean 24-bit and all)

old nes:

mine:

Piece of cake Just need to add the "underwater effect", I could use a blue tile that uses an alpha channel. Anyway, I like the shiny effect
