Just downloaded the free Borland C# Builder today. I'm quite impressed to be honost. It includes a 19 chapter tutorial to get started with C#, as well as some key chapters from a couple books.

I've always liked Borland's IDE's and compilers for some odd reason, though I still prefer Microsofts solutions.

Well, I also decided since I was going to work with C# a little bit, it might be a good idea to download the DirectX 9 SDK and play with it a bit.

Man o'man, had some impressive demoes in there. Especially the lighting and EnhanceMesh/Progressive mesh demoes.

Anyway, anyone else here have experience with C#. Looking at a couple of books right now that'll cover Managed DirectX. Not many resources on the web as of now.

More importantly though, is C# the language to learn as windows grows even more? I'm considering using C# in the long run in and a combination of Java if I want portibility.

It should be noted that C & C++ will be around for the foreseeable future, and has less overhead.

It might change slightly with Longhorn, especially if .Net becomes faster (and some API calls can only be done through .Net).

It would be safe to say that many large game developers are using C# for their titles.

Jeku, I think you mean C++. But I would offer that in the time it takes to learn C++, C# will become the premier coding language (along with other .NET langs like vb.net), relegating c++ and vb6 to maintenance languages

I can't get to that site. I tried just www.borland.com , but it says the address could not be found.

Does it still work for the rest of you?

@CattleRustler:
That's what I was hoping to read.

@The Coding Area:
Agreed, but I think C# will start taking over within the next 10 years.

Do you mean C++? I wouldn't be surprised if many game companies were going or are starting to use C# though. (What do you use down at EA? )

Hmm, works for me on IE6.

C# and C++ are very very similar when your using managed programming; to be honest you would be hard pushed to tell them apart most of the time except for C# uses . instead of :: also it uses try instead of switch... but apart from that really isn't that different at all.

I tend to find they are a pain...

The On Error system used by VB is annoying too...

All sounds good.

Might be able to actually play around with it a little this weekend. I also downloaded Java 1.5 and JavaOGL for the heck of it.

C#. maybe I should take a look at it.

Hey MikeS if you take on Java I can give you a collision detection class for it that I made.

Excellent Epo, I'd be glad to look at any code you have. Although I'll need to practice up on Java a little first.
