Hey, I was just chatting on another forum which was being badly spammed, and I came up with the best forum modification ever!

An Ignore button for Mods to use that makes an entire forum ignore that user!!! It's quicker, and easier than a ban, and the spammer would not know that he was being ignored by everyone for some time.

Call it the 'Coventry' button. As in "You've been sent to Coventry!" In England that means that you are being ignored by everyone!

A ban has the same apparent effect without wasting forum data space and leaving room for bugs

Yeah, but they sign on under a different name, but with my idea, they would not know that they were being ignored, unless you tell them.

Yeah you could even make a spam bot to talk to them.

Have an ignore button for each person. That way instead of being an annoying little whiney ass to the mods, you can just place that user under ignore. Simple and effective.

that's why no one would use the feature...it's either all or none. I vote for paxton's idea.

I don't like you.

On the Atari site that I was using, they display a message where the post should be. It says that "This Poster is being Ignored. Click HERE to read the post." That is a single ignore, the usual way.

Now I want "This poster has been sent to Coventry, you cannot read his posts! Please do not indicate to this person that you cannot see his post!"

I'd say that's just like setting the user back to approve status, we can currently do that at the request of Rich, but moderators can't themselves.

Sounds like a good idea but there are flaws - ie it will be about 20 minutes before they find out - unless they are stupid

Personally, I prefer to select a paragraph then click quote rather than open / type / close.

But I digress.

In firefox when you do that it seems to only put it on the end.
