i write things, not published things, but i used to be hell of mad for writing stories, rangign from fantasy to modern fiction. i think i lost my touch somewhere through highschool, but i reckon i can still pull off a mad story line or two.

I write stories but... Not little kid ones! I get distracted with school and my new pet hamster and Football. But I try to when I have freetime! What type of story do you recommend I try to make?

I remember in highschool we (the whole class) were told to participate in a story-writing competition, where the story had to have something to do with energy conservation. I wrote one of the longest stories. It involved a child living in the year 2304, who was dieing because a power outage caused his incubator to turn off. In an era where the air was too toxic to breathe, energy was more vital now than ever. I went on to describe the morbid deaths of those who didn't pay their electricity bills, or went over the limit.
Everyone else in my class got a note saying their story was "nice" or something like that. Except I, for some reason, got a note saying I had some kind of problem. Maybe the drawing I sent (a person being tortured by cranial compression) was a bit too much...

If any of you writers want a nice challenge, the National Novel Writing Month challenge starts up in November. The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month.

Side note, there might be a few writers out there that don't write stories. I like to write war game and RPG rules. My latest writing assignment is a game design treatment. [You can find that on my web site below.]

Anyone use http://www.fanfiction.net/? Can be quite interesting. Keep meaning to write a Darkplace episode or Garth Merengi book at some point, just never find the time. Oh, and does anyone know when the Darkplace DVD boxset is due out? Awesome series that.

Cheers

I read a few of the parody ones on FanFiction.net. There are also a few serious ones i read, couple good writers. But alot of times there are pretty sh*tty writers.

AMD 64bit 3200+, Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro motherboard, 512meg HYPER RAM, ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb, 120GB Maxtor 7200RPM, nFinity Version 2

Fanfiction.net is one of the saddest sites on the internet that doesn't actually fall into the realm of pitiful or awful-- not because fan fiction is sad, but because 99.9% of the stuff on that site sucks. There is no quality control, and that's the natural result. I've read a good deal of fan fiction from time to time, and while some good stuff is on ffn, it's almost impossible to find. Specific sites for whatever universe you're into that have quality control are worlds better for finding decent fiction.

Parodies of average fanfiction.net stories can be really hilarious though

Oh yeah, and there's http://www.fictionpress.net for original fiction. I wouldn't know about the average quality there, but there's no filter, so be warned .

To tell the truth I haven't actually read anything on it. Only found it a few months ago when it was mentioned in a writing magazine. Just browsed the topics, and it looked ok. But yeah, anything unmoderated is going to have a seriously large amount of junk. I mean there are something like 150 *thousand* stories about Harry Potter on there. Was kind of hoping someone would point out some decent stories on it.

Out of interest, what is everyone reading at the minute? I just finished Only Forward by Michael Marshall Smith. Good sci-fi stuff in a trippy universe. Now onto the new Pratchett book : Going Postal. Good so far.

Cheers

@Jimmy: Have you ever read "The Tommy Knockers"? It's a horror/sci-fi book by Stephen King.
