Personally, I have no idea how I'm doing. I have an alpha version of my snake game, but you can't do much. I'm working on it as I type this.

I also wanted to make a Scorched Earth type game, but I haven't even started on it yet, so I'm wondering if I should abandon the idea or not.

So anyway, how is everyone else?

If I hadn't given up after 2 weeks I would have a definite winner on my hands.

game engine is up and running, now I just need some decent media and to sort out my menu system. p.s. I finished the Levelmaker first, i'll post a screenie as soon as Yahoo give me my site back (dumb bandwidth restrictions )

oh yeah, and it's for the Snake Game category

Part of solving the problem is actually noticing that the problem is there in the first place

Difficult to say exactly how I'm doing, but so far my "snake" game is going like this:

Updated Magic World to use as my level editor
Snake slithers, body follows well, goes up and down terrain as it should. Collision with body is detected
Food "works" - it is detected and eaten, snake extends
Objects "work" - can be collided with
Scoring works
Timer works
Display of score / timer etc working
Score / Timer sprites designed

To Do list includes:
Loading/Unloading multiple levels
Menu
Hi Scores
Loads of graphical stuff and objects
Moving over 3D objects that are not terrain or Obstacles
Lives
anything else I can think of

It's going to be a tight squeeze again.

I haven't even thought of an idea yet! I do still plan on doing something though. Working from home makes things a bit easier though as I can squeeze in a few extra hours during the day on the game instead of doing work (hope my boss doesn't read this)

I'd guess I'm about 70-80% complete with what I plan to submit... whether or not that's a complete game may be dependant on your point of view

but it'll have ragdolls, dammit!

for those curious, things left to do:
1. animate 2 enemy models
2. finish modelling, texturing, and animating the "hostage" model
3. actually write the game engine (sounds like a lot, but the level editor contains most of the code for the engine too)
4. make a menu/GUI
5. sound effects + music
6. finish the background models (a little modelling + a lot of texturing and lightmapping)..

good lord, I better get to work

I'm probably about 70% done...I'm just working on modelling new levels - which takes it's time, but they are very easy to add. Got to add more sound and the music which I've already got. And I started on the menu screens the other day too - still got to finish those. Anyway it's half term in about a week so I'll be working away every day then. I'm not planning on releasing any screenshots until maybe the last week on the comp.

Time surely is running out .

I'm about done with the editors, and the engine itself will spawn from that. I've done all the media for 1 level, but it's reusable stuff - and I've done my main enemy model.

Still lots to do, but hopefully I can get stuck in this week, get the engine running levels, then I can get the rest of the levels and media done next week. My biggest headache is collision, I have developed a completely new (to me at least) method that might just rock if I can get it fast enough, it's like gift wrapping your objects with stretchy cardboard.

A tight schedule to be sure, is it just me or is there much less time to make our games this time round?. It might just be the added work involved in making FPS media, there's not many shortcuts if you know what I mean, you have to be able to look at your stuff from any angle .

As you can see, in the screenshot, there is no soldier...now the map is full of soldiers and i'll add some tanks (later..later)
i added some patches of grass and trees...it looks better now, but i don't have enough time to upload other screenshots

I'm about 80% done.
Engine - 90%
Levels - 20%
Sounds - 95%
Music - 95%
Other Artwork - 95%
Menus - 80%

What's with these line counts? 6592?!? Mine's just over 1000 and it's really spaced out.

The thing I'm most pleased in my game is the collision. Like Van B, I think it's a new way of doing it. I certainly came up with it myself. Anyway, it's super fast, fully deformable terrain and it's pixel-perfectly accurate, on a level that's 4000*2000 pixels big. Waaaaaay.

None of the other Scorched Earth entries I've seen have completely detructable terrain (so you can have over hangs). Most of the 3D ones have 'dipable' terrain where you can put dents in it.

I found it. The download link is dead though, could you possibly upload it again then just post the link here?

I just want to see it on a technical level, I don't care about the graphics.

Hurry up with that new thread. If I learnt anything from the last competition it was to get your game out there early and start taking suggestions.

Its because the program is doing a lot of things, such as the polygon shattering engine I wrote. The menu is now quite complex so also demanded a lot lines to be spent on it.

@David T- yeah i used "wakehost" which went down

i can upload it to my new site though...but i don't have the old version

as for starting a new thread...well i'm in the middle of re-doing some of the core engine (explosions ) so i can't release it untill i'm done with that (maybe today...maybe friday)

but i can describe it to you...teh way it works is each pixel is stored in an array and when you make an explosion, anything that's not supported by something underneath it falls down untill it hit's something... so each indiviual pixel can move around...i use memblocks to get them from an array to the screen...

They're lucky - I have no idea at all what to call my game, once I ruled out starting the name with 'Operation' my ideas dried right up . Name suggestions welcome for an arcade orientated FPS with terrorists and hostages.

I actually got a lot done yesterday, so I am looking good for getting it all done in time - even figured out a painless way to spawn my enemies using a waypoint system. Level editor is now done, Starting on gutting out the engine tonight, should be fun .

Yeah, good names, but it won't fit with my plot though - my idea is that your on a unauthorised mission to rescue some hostages and get captured, then you have to go on a solo mission to rescue everyone, including your team.
