First of all, greetings to everyone.
This is "Deathwing", from Italy.

I am not yet owner of a copy of Darkbasic,
but I am planning to purchase it soon.

The advice I need is basically one:

Which version would be more appropriate for a beginner?
Should I begin with DarkBasic or is it worth to buy DbPro?

Take present that my programming experience could be resumed
as follows:

- Application development with RAD tools such as Visual Basic or Delphi

- 2D Game design with simple editing/scripting tools like Rpg Maker 2000 (which I master), Sphere etc.

I don't know anything about:

- 3D graphics
- 3D programming
- Physics applied to game programming
- Direct X
- Whatever

Now, I did read the DbPro presentation in which it is said that in any case, DbPro's functions can be discovered and used in time, so it is always worth...

But, I didn't exactly understand which Db's effective simplicity level is....
I mean, how much time after will I be able to take advantage of DbPro's advanced features?

Of course it would depend on my subjective skill/dedition level,
but I need an advice just to orient myself...
I have to be careful on my money since it is not infinite

So.... sorry for having written too much

I hope you can help me,
thanks a lot.

Hi Deathwing. I would buy DBP as they are both extremely easy to use. You can download the demos for both and play around as they are pretty much fully functional. I haven't found either one to be easier than the other. You can just do more with DBP. And if you run into any trouble, people here are more than happy to help you as long as you ask nicely and try for yourself first. Good luck.

I agree with Lost In Thought.. get DBP if your going to get anything at all. Having a program as capable as DBC to learn the basics on, aswell as once you advance, you wont need to buy another program because you'll have the capabilities right there for you.

Also, i would suggest learning some of the 2d command sets in dbp before heading over to 3d.. Makes life simpler.

Like LIT said, there are people here who are quite happy helping people along the way if you ask politely... and dear god, use the edit button instead of double posts

WindowsXP Home(Service pack 2), Athlon XP 2400+(2.1Ghz), 1GIG Ram, Ati Radeon 9800Pro 128MB.

Thanks to both of you...

In reality i have not yet decided whether to concentrate
on 3d programming or 2d, with Dark Basic...

In fact, i do like well done 2d graphics much more
than mediocre/medium 3d graphics.....

So, here's my next question

Should I decide to concentrate on 2D, doing exercises
and having as goal a small 2d game,
would it be worth buying DbPro? Does DbPro have also any
advanced 2d functions?

Btw, I already have downloaded Dbc Demo...

It is absurd!
That room with the scorpion going around,
in so FEW lines of code

Darkbasic rocks

Let's try DbPro, too

I believe that DB Pro is faster with 2D than DB Classic. Also, Pro has some useful commands for sprites that DB Classic does not, such as rotating sprites to any degree. I would defenitely go with Pro, no matter what you want to do with it.

Mate, I can't agree more. I have been coding for almost twenty years, and almost always in 2D. Dark Basic is possibly the best 2D language I've ever seen, and you will find all the capability you want in DBP. DBC is lacking several important commands, and isn't quite as fast.

If and when you decide you want to tinker with 3D, you've already seen how easy it is. DBC is cheaper, but no easier to learn on, and lacks several important technology advancements that are made in DBP.

You want DBP. Trust me.
