Hi,

Does anybody knwo of any places where you can get either

- free hosting that has cron jobs enabled

- or just a service that'll do cron for you?

I have quite a high spec shared hosting package but it doesn't allow cron - I need cron for my next project in PHP and so I've had to try and find other solutions.

Incidentally, if anybody is feeling really kind, if you do have cron enabled would you mind calling a script like this:



once every hour?

Cron is a feature where you can specify a script to be run at regular intervals.

Instead of using a Cron job, each time a person views a page, couldn't you just check for the last time the script was run, and then call it if it is over the interval? I know several other scripts use that as an alternative to cron.

No - I must have the script run every hour. I'm writing my own game, and a new cycle starts every hour

but if nobody visits for two hours..what's it matter? Just calculate all the info once someone views a page and send it off...

This is for an airline game. At the end of each 'day' (1 hour) there are many things that must be done.

I can't just leave it for two hours then recalculate when somebody comes back on again as I'll have lost a whole cycle. I'm afraid I just can't do it that way.

You way would work if I had a site that harvested new, say, twice a day - but it wouldn't work for what I need.

That's the first google result for me. It has a listing of sites who provide free hosting with cron jobs enabled. I've checked a few of them out, and they look legit.

Jebus - I've already seen that site today (I did a search on google before posting here, lol) and there are only two sites there that don't require any forum posting. One has notorious downtime problems and I'm awaiting a confirmation email from the other.

I just asked on here to see if anybody else had any good services or personal recommendations.

OK, just making sure as search engines sometimes have a habit of displaying different results for different folks depending on their ip block.

Which one's did you apply for? I just did 000k.com and am awaiting approval. I'll let you know how it is when / if I get it.

eh... why not? When you go over the hour your info will be processed in less then a second assumedly..

so if two hours pass.. process twice.. sheesh, you don't need to waste server resources by *forcing* to do it every hour..

@DavidT - I can do that cron for you off my server. The only thing is, it needs a certain "command" that will be run at a specified interval. I've entered http://www.davidtattersall.me.uk/game/update.php as the command, but I don't think it will work. Anyways, I've set it to email me after each try so I'll let you know.

Crap. Looks like that "command" doesn't work. If you know of a Unix command which loads a webpage, then I can use it. Unfortunately http://www.davidtattersall.me.uk/game/update.php by itself doesn't work Sorry.

Jeku - you can't run PHP scripts directly via cron. You need to either have PHP installed in binary form (and then David would need to reference that in the first line of his script with a standard hashbang), or you run the PHP script through something like Lynx. This works okay for us:

13 23 * * * /usr/local/bin/lynx -dump -auth:user:pass http://www.site.com/file.php

Drop the -auth section if it doesn't need it.

Looks pretty good so far. They give you mail addys, FTP access, MySQL and PostgreSQL database, Stats, subdomain, Cron jobs, and a bunch of other stuff.
